The Worst Things For Health

At age 16 I was a volunteer at a hospital bacteriology lab. I became a chemist for U.S. government. Then I studied health & related fields.

One Thing That is Terrible for Health-- Drugs

Worst Things for Health

This was written in May of 2012. Cardiologists said that the leading cause of heart attacks is smoking cigarettes (that contain tobacco).

Neurologists said that the leading cause of strokes is smoking. Can you guess what webmd said is worse than smoking? has an article called: Cutting Salt as Good as Quitting Smoking. It says:

Jan. 22, 2010 -- Cutting U.S. salt intake by just half a teaspoon a day would prevent up to 92,000 deaths, 99,000 heart attacks, and 66,000 strokes -- a benefit as big as smoking cessation.

Please note that links in blue open in the same window. If you have plenty of memory (not an old computer), then you can right click on a link and click to open it in a new window like I do a lot.

Otherwise you can right click the BACK button to see a list of the websites that you were at and choose the one to go back to.

Now here is something that you only find in my articles. If you take 4 ounces of salt and put it into a pint of water and drink it all, you will die. This is fact. [The story about this happening is in the 600 page online book below, under the chapter on salt] There is no need to use opinions like calling it toxic or a poison. Salt is not a food. Foods have less than 1% sodium or any mineral. Salt is 40% sodium.

There is a new thing called LD50. It is the amount of a substance (Lethal Dose) required to kill 50% of the subjects. According to Wikipedia on this subject, 3,000 milligrams (mg) of common table salt given to rats will kill 50% of the rats. This is less than a tenth of an ounce.

A rat can eat an ounce of food and not die. Again, salt is not a food. Please note that this much salt has 1,200 mg of sodium and this is what kills 50% of the rats. That is slightly over a gram of sodium and a gram is 1/28th of an ounce (28 grams in an ounce).

Since they say that cutting salt is as good as quitting smoking, then quitting salt would be better than quitting smoking. Gorillas, baboons, monkeys and apes use a lot less salt than humans. Just kidding! They do not use any salt. Many humans have been conditioned to believe that people need salt. They do not. Humans need sodium that is in most foods but in much smaller amounts.

Some think that we need salt in our diet. This is like saying that we need rust (iron oxide) and gunpowder in our diet. We get the iron from food so we do not need to consume rust. We get sulfur in our diet like from cabbage family vegetables. We do not need to get sulfur from gunpowder. I am a chemist and gunpowder is made from carbon, sulfur and potassium nitrate.

For more on salt, you can read my article about the Main Cause of High Blood Pressure or Can Salt Make You Overweight or Flawed Study on Health and Diet that proves that the more salt that you eat, the healthier it is for you. The flaw is they only measured sodium in urine and falsely assume that the more salt that you eat, the more sodium will be in your urine. Actually drinking green tea or consuming more potassium, causes more sodium in your urine where it cannot hurt you. Not consuming any salt (fasting) puts huge amounts of sodium in your urine. I have an article on the Many Benefits of Fasting.

But there is something worse for health than salt. The following is sad since these celebrities were loved by millions of people. Elvis Presley, the king of rock that also starred in movies, died at age 42. Michael Jackson, the king of pop, died at age 50. Whitney Houston died at age 48. Brittany Murphy died at age 32. Bruce Lee died at 32. Judy Garland died at age 47 of barbiturate overdose. Heath Ledger (in A Knight's Tale and The Dark Knight) died at age 28 from a toxic combination of prescription drugs (medications).

All the above died from medications unlike Chris Farley and John Belushi that both died at age 33 due to illegal drugs. Brittany Murphy was in Clueless and one of my favorite movies-- Uptown Girls . Her mother said that she died of toxic mold. But the coroner said that she died of pneumonia, anemia and multiple drug intoxication. Wikipedia says:

On February 25, 2010, the coroner released a report stating that Murphy had been taking a range of over-the-counter and prescription medications, with the most likely reason being to treat a cold or respiratory infection [maybe from toxic mold]. These included "elevated levels" of hydrocodone, acetaminophen, L-methamphetamine and chlorpheniramine. All of the drugs were legal and the death was ruled to be an accident, but the report observed: "the possible adverse physiological effects of elevated levels of these medications cannot be discounted, especially in her weakened state." [L-methamphetamine is sold over the counter and is different than the illegal drug meth]

Judy Garland was Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz . So the worst thing for health is medications that are also called drugs. Many have been recalled and there are big class action lawsuits. Vioxx was approved by the FDA and lots of people were being prescribed it for pain. It killed many people before it was recalled.

Drugs treat the symptoms not the cause. All of them are bad for health. Just read the small print with all the side effects. Forty percent of drugs (medications) are to treat the side effects of other drugs. Drugs are poisons and shorten your life span.

Here is an article about a medical doctor (Joel Fuhrman M.D.) being on the Dr. Oz TV show and explaining why drugs do not work. He says that if a light on your car lights up and says that you are low on oil, you can fix it by removing the bulb and not adding the oil. He says that is exactly what medications do. He believes that food should be your medicine.

Dr. Fuhrman follows a vegan or plant-based diet. He has helped thousands of people by getting them to do fasting and then change their diet. See Prevent and Reverse Disease With a Plant-Based Diet.

Let nothing which can be treated by diet be treated by other means. ~Maimonides

When diet is wrong, medicine is of no use. When diet is correct, medicine is of no need. ~Ayurvedic Proverb

Leave your drugs in the chemist's pot if you can heal the patient with food. ~Hippocrates

Medical Doctors say that most people that have cancer and die, die of chemotherapy. But since they would not be taking it if they did not have cancer, then the cause of death is cancer. President George Washington died of a very sore throat. To treat him, they bled 3 pints of blood from him. But at that time, bleeding or bloodletting was the main treatment used by doctors.

Kevin Trudeau says in his best selling book, Natural Cures They Do Not Want You to Know About:

All illnesses and diseases are caused by the same things; (1) too many toxins in the body; (2) nutritionally deficiencies; (3) electromagnetic chaos exposure; (4) mental and/or emotional distress." "The most effective way to cure and prevent disease is by getting the toxins out." "One very powerful cleanse is, of course, fasting." "Drugs only suppress symptoms, and they cause disease because they are toxic.

In More Natural Cures Revealed , Kevin Trudeau says:

The facts are clear, drugs, both prescription and non-prescription, do not make you healthier, they make you sicker. Drug companies are not interested in your health. Drug companies only want you to buy and use more drugs. If you want to cure yourself of any disease you have and remain healthy, you must eliminate all non-prescription and prescription drugs.

I used to have this 600 page book on health by Dr Shelton (N.D., D.C.) and read it. But here it is on line to read. 300 of those pages is about how bad drugs are but you cannot skip over it since it is interspersed throughout the book. It says:

To reiterate: all things in existence are, in their relations to the vital organism, either foods or poisons. Foods are those things which the organism uses by appropriating them into the formation of tissue; poisons are those things which the organism cannot use in the formation of tissue and, hence, rejects. On the basis of this principle, we unhesitatingly declare that all those substances (drugs) that are employed as medicines are destructive of the structural integrity and functional vigor of the organs and tissues of the body.

We unhesitatingly declare that if physicians would cast their diplomas into the fire, their drugs into the sea and close their offices, an untold amount of suffering, grief and premature dying would be avoided. As was said by a noted British physician of the last century: if there were not a single physician, surgeon, druggist, man mid-wife, nor drug in all the world, there would be less sickness and less mortality than otherwise--hence the wisdom Shakespeare puts into the mouth of one of his characters: "Throw physic (drugs) to the dogs; I'll none of it."

When, for example, the death rate in typhoid fever was 40 percent, the treatment administered was lethal. When a method of treatment was introduced under which the death rate fell to 12 and eight percent, the question still remained: does the new treatment cure more cases or does it merely kill fewer?

Dr Shelton believes that what is good for the healthy person is good for the sick person. Also what is bad for the healthy person is bad for the sick person. Every year 40,000 Americans need liver transplants and most will not get one and die. This is mostly due to acetaminophen in drugs like Tylenol.

Above you have an online book that you can read. In the late 1800s some smart medical doctors saw that drugs were hurting people. So they decided to stop using drugs and heal them naturally like with better diet, exercise and other things. They called it hygiene which means natural preservation of health (definition 1 in dictionary).

At this time the MDs were telling people that bathing was bad for health. They said that the more that you bathed, the worse that it was for health. They also taught that blood letting or bleeding was good. The hygienists taught that bathing was healthy. People tried both and saw that they felt better by bathing instead of staying dirty.

So the MDs said that bathing has nothing to do with health and medicine, but it was about cleanliness so the people practicing hygiene knew about cleanliness. This is how it got its second definition that everyone is familiar with. The author of that book, Dr Herbert Shelton, fasted 40,000 people. One of those people was the mother of Joel Fuhrman.

When Fuhrman was a teen he broke his foot and the doctors said that he would never skate again. So he went to Dr Shelton who fasted him for over 40 days (longer than Jesus fasted). He won some skating medals and became an MD. He has fasted thousands of people. Below is a 90 second video with Dr Oz introducing Dr Fuhrman as the expert on losing weight.

Dr Fuhrman also created the ANDI scale of foods used by Whole Foods markets and also GOMBBs (greens, onions, mushrooms, berries, beans and seeds and nuts). On a Youtube video someone asks Dr Fuhrman about sea salt. He said that is has more minerals than regular salt but if you add minerals to heroin, it is still heroin.

Story about a Registered Dietition, Her Son and the Drug Singulair

A registered dietitian (R.D.) gave her a child a medication. She knows a great deal about medications since she is a professional-- made her living promoting drugs. She is even a goddess of diet-- Diva Dietitian. Now she does not talk about her family on her blog but this time she did since by giving her child a medication, it made him bonkers. And she is not sure what is going on. See What is Causing This Behavior? [Site taken down] From this blog post:

Anyway, last week I noticed my 5 year old son started acting really different (Thus, the lack of posts last week) I was a worried mess. Prior to this, he had never had any real health issues except a little asthma stuff going on during soccer season last fall.

The only thing I could think we had done differently around here was we had been giving him Singulair for his allergy induced Asthma.

Because I launched the drug Singulair as a sales Rep for Merck many years ago, I thought I knew all about Singulair [she learned that she missed the main warning about it].

His movements looked like Tourettes Syndrome. He was constantly blinking, nodding and moving his hands. I used my iPhone to video his behavior.

BTW-I am NOT going to post the video, just don’t want to & because the video makes me sad to watch.

Instead of drugs, here is an article about Foods That Prevent Disease-- GOMBBS. Some of my other articles on Hub Pages tell about foods that fight disease like Watermelon helping with high blood pressure and erectile dysfunction and Great Foods That Fight Cancer. Tests show that garlic cripples or kills 72 infectious bacteria that spreads dysentery, tuberculosis, diarrhea, botulism, encephalitis and others. Onions (the "O" in GOMBBS) are also exceptionally strong antibiotics and antiseptics that were used to treat infections in wounded Russian soldiers in World War II.

Iatrogenesis or Iatrogenic Diseases

What is iatrogenesis or an iatrogenic artifact? It is a disease or sickness caused by a physician. The 600 page book above talks about it-- chapter 47 Iatrogenic Diseases. Now you may have heard that is good to take an aspirin everyday to prevent heart attacks and for other benefits. Aspirin is a drug and it has been proposed that it should be made a prescription drug. It kills about 2,000 Americans a year.

Yale Medical School says:

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that you discuss with your doctor the potential benefits and drawbacks of taking aspirin BEFORE you start to take it. In some people, taking aspirin does pose health risks, including peptic ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, and allergic reactions, and it can increase the risk for a hemorrhagic stroke [the kind that is not a clot but a blood vessel bleeding].

Wikipedia has a page on iatrogenesis. It says that in the U.S., there are 106,000 deaths due to non-error, negative effects of medications (drugs). Now you add in (see page above about iatrogenesis on Wikipedia) the 80,000 deaths to infections in hospitals, 20,000 deaths due to errors in hospitals and more and you get 225,000 iatrogenic deaths in the U.S. every year.

Now there are medical doctors or physicians and osteopathic doctors that try to avoid drugs like Joel Fuhrman M.D., Mark Hyman M.D., Andrew Weil M.D. who has a school for this, Joseph Mercola D.O., David Katz M.D., Leo Galland M.D. and to some extent Dr. Oz and many more, like the MDs that wrote this article: The American Medical System Is The Leading Cause Of Death And Injury In The United States by Gary Null PhD, Carolyn Dean MD ND, Martin Feldman MD, Debora Rasio MD, Dorothy Smith PhD. Here is that article.

I have never been one for adding salt to my diet. My mom always thought that was weird because I never "flavor" my foods. Maybe that makes me bland but after reading this, I am glad that I am not a salt addict!

Actually that is my goal. But the articles end up getting much longer. I do have an article on fasting. I also have an article on salt making people overweight. I have an article on high blood pressure being caused by too much salt and not enough potassium. I just wrote another article and hoped it would be under 1,000 words but it ended up being over 1,600 words.

I think you should break this article up into 3 different articles. Stay focused.

Write one on salt and decreasing the use of it.

Write one on drugs and the abuse of them.

      write one on fasting.

Keep each articles short no more than 1000 words.
