The Law of Attraction: Positive Thinking New Wave

Updated on April 19, 2013

The Law of Attraction: Find Your Way

This is the Law of Attraction: Focus on positive things and they will be attracted to you. Rediscovered in the The Secret movie this is the common definition but does Positive Thinking work in this way? We desire and we attract? In my humble opinion definitely not.

Common definition of the Law of Attraction

First of all let me give some credit to the ones who really deserve it. What is now called the Law of Attraction, or the Secret, or whatever you like to call it, derives almost in its entirety from a group of writers from the so called New Thought Movement, dating back to 1800 to the first part of 1900. People like James Allen, Charles F. Haanel, Wallace Wattles, and many others. Wikipedia has a quite long list of them. And don't forget the enormous influence Napoleon Hill had on Positive Thinking with "Think and Grow Rich"still sold worldwide. Really, there are no secrets about the Law of Attraction.

For the sake of truth almost all of their writings are public domain so you don't even need to spend a penny to read about them and their thoughts. A lot of their writing are at the Project Gutenberg website but if you are like me it's better to spend a little money to buy some very good books.

The Law of Attraction states that if you keep thinking positive and focus on what you want then sooner or later, usually sooner, your wish are satisfied as the universe is there to answer your desires.

That is, putting it very simply, "Like attracts Like". Or, as Wikipedia explains "If you really want something and truly believe it's possible, you'll get it".

Sorry but it can't be this way, The Secret movie doesn't explain it correctly. Is there anyone who can honestly think that a mother from Africa who is looking at his child dying because there is no food doesn't wish enough? That her desire for food is not strong enough? Or that a girl who is chased by a rapist doesn't wish strongly enough to be saved? Or that people in war zones doesn't desire strongly enough to live in peace? Or is it because bad people wish better? Or stronger?

Does Positive Thinking work only for some people?

If there is a rule than it must work all the times. Otherwise is not a rule, but a chance.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't believe at all that we "attract" everything that happens to us. I don't believe The Secret movie tells how things really work and the Law of Attraction most of the times isn't correct. Because if this would be true than it means that a mother who loose a child has deserved it? And the child too? There are criminals who die old in their bed without having had a problem at all and there are good people who die young. Is this all attracted? Are these the gifts of the Law of Attraction? Or of Positive Thinking? Not really.

Why things happen and the real Law of Attraction

It is true that most of the times if you smile at life then life will smile back at you; and that if you sow winds then you sooner or later, reap whirlwinds. And it is definitely true that if you try to remain positive as much as possible your life will surely be better.

But this has nothing to do with the Law of Attraction, much more with Positive Thinking.

While some things happens because there are reasons for them (for example in Africa there are many people dying from wars or starvation but there are a lot who make an enormous amount of money from this situation), some others happen by chance. There isn't a clear cause-effect relationship. But it's not yours the responsibility for all of them.

The Secret movie is simply, wrong.

If someone throws a punch at you it can be that you did something to receive it, it can be that you walked in the wrong part of the city, but it can also be that you have been unlucky and just met a crazy man or a criminal.

If someone in your family dies it doesn't mean that you, him or someone else attracted disease and/or death. There isn't always an explanation or a reason for everything. Some things happens because they happens. What instead is always in your power to do is how to react to those things and how you look at them, Positive Thinking or not.

How the Law of Attraction really works.

It is not that focusing on desires you attract them in your life. What happens is that wishing strongly something you begin to change your focus and your attention becoming more aware of opportunities to achieve what you want.

Let's say that you would like a new car, whatever your preferred model is. The more you think of it the more you see it on the road, on commercials, on newspaper ads and suddenly you find it for a price you can afford. Is it you who attracted your new car? No, you have become more aware about it and looking differently at things found an occasion to buy it that you can afford. It's simply a matter of awareness.

As much as bad things can happens by chance, the same is true also for good things. We can't be always unlucky or always lucky and if someone feels either one of this he's always right. Because as James Allen said in his wonderful greatest book, "As a man thinketh in his heart so he will be". That's the real Law of Attraction.

So Positive Thinking actually helps in bringing, or being aware of, positivity in your life but it really depends on how you look at things.

The Law of Attraction is another way for focusing our inner powers to have greater chances to achieve what we want in our life. That is: focusing on our desired goals we can "attract ourselves" to them, increasing our chances to achieve the desired results. So, forget The Secret movie.

If you want to reach the North Pole having a compass which shows you the right path it is you who is moving; the North Pole remains where it is. You can reach it because your (inner) compass is attracted by it.

Positive thinking brings positivity in your life not really because it's like a magnet but because it makes you aware that there are positive things in your life.

I think a lot of it comes to what you believe in your inner world and your outer world matches that vibration. If you believe strongly then you have more of a chance of drawing something to you. It is not about "wanting" neediness keeps you in the lack but appreciation and feeling fine where you are brings in new opportunities.

Right, when we want someone and are open to possibilities we can see the way to reach our goal, and have what we want. Then we have only to act. Thanks for voting/rating.

One thing is for sure, we will be attracted to it or it will be attracted to us, the success is when the opportunity is present, and it is a good opportunity, we have the knowledge and courage and confidence to accept it. Peace!. Voted-up/rated!

Hi KenK, actually there are many ways to see the Law of Attraction. So some people prefers to aim at goals which are general and some others instead like to aim for clear, definite goals. I think that having a defined goal helps to achieve it. I want to be rich is one thing, I want to have a positive balance in my bank account is better, I can find ways to have 500$ in my bank account is best.

As I said above it's not really that we attract things, it's more that aiming at them we are attracted to positive things, that is we become more open and aware of opportunities and possibilities which will take us where we want to be.

The key to the Law of Attraction is that we "attract ourselves" to our goal. Obviously this requires efforts and perseverance but it's definitely in our possibilities. Or said differently "If you will it, it is no dream". Thanks for your kind and interesting comment. :)

P.s. Feel free to add a link here from your website.

Overall, I agree with what you have stated about the law of attraction, but there are so many other factors that have to be considered when trying to attract that which you seek. One big factor is that you have to believe it's possible and from my own perspective, thinking only positive thoughts and making only positive statements (yes, you must also speak positively) will transform your life if you give it the time it deserves, which could be a year or more before you start seeing real results from your efforts. Also I have found that it is much easier to manifest new situations and opportunities that can bring you resources to get what you want, than it is to specifically try to attract physically tangible things like cars and houses. Perhaps with the right beliefs and thoughts you can eventually learn how to create something physical from nothing but pure thought energy, but just like with all things in life, you must crawl before you can learn to walk. Human nature is that if we don't get what we want right now, then we give up and basically destroy all the positive energy that we were creating to try to bring things to us. And giving up isn't an option if you want to make this work for you. Check out my site for more tips on manifesting your desires:

Thanks wave girl, I'm glad if I can give a different angle to one of your hubs, but you already have a special point of view in what you write, that's why your hubs are always a pleasure to read, even when you talk about creams.:)

A hub on Kabbalah, well, I know nothing about it and so I just can't wait to read it, it will be surely a great hub.

It's always a pleasure to read your kind comments, and good work with the Sumo Squat. LOL. And have a great day!

    P.s. I'm honored by your words. ;)

Very nice hub Hypnodude. You have really explained how law of attraction really works. Many people have a wrong notion about it. And you are right Law of Attraction is simply focusing on things you want and being aware of it. Rated up. Thanks for the share.

I agree with you mulberry. The important point is that while being positive doesn't assure positive results being negative does indeed assure negative results. There is a better chance of having what you desire. As you rightly say action is required, wishing in a certain sense open up our awareness and creativity to find and see ways to act to achieve our desired results. But they don't come on their own. :)

    Thanks for your keen comment.

I don't know that much about the law of attraction, but my impression pretty much follows what you're saying. It's definitely good to wish for things and to have positive thoughts, no doubt. But it requires you to take action. (which may result from your positive thoughts) But there is always chance and other forces at work that can thwart you.

Well, we have already arranged a meeting on one of those wonderful places you described in your hub on Romantic Destinations, right? :)

Thanks for your kind words wavegirl, I'm glad you liked this hub. Honestly I know almost nothing about the Kabbalah, why don't you write a hub on it? I would already rate it up.

I'll write a new hub on the issue, as soon as I find a good concept to discuss. Any idea?

Have a wonderful day and thanks again.

hypnodude .. i love the depth of your thinking. . and agree with all that you have to say. . and you say it so well and complete.. .i do believe we think alot alike. .and the more I read your words the more that thought (fact) is confirmed. alot of 'the secret' the law of attraction is to be able to visualize things.. . people love to ask the question . if you could have lunch with someone .. who would it be .. and I must tell you .. you are on top of that list for me. . i am also a little curious if you have ever read anything on kabbalah? And i do not mean the trendy Madonna version. . though there is something to be said of the path that she has taken . .ok enough of my ranting here. .

    Please write some more supito!

Hi Maita, you're always so nice and kind with me. I would add that as they say smiling requires less muscles than frowning, so better keep smiling. And let's not forget less wrinkles too. :) I usually always as well approach things with a smile, at the end there is always enough time left to become angry. But it's my last resort, so to speak. :):):)

Definitely right, the only thing we can do is to control how we react to bad things. And try to come out of the pit as soon as possible. Thanks for your comment CMHypno.

I like your take on The Law of Attraction, as I have never believed that all the people caught up in a famine or natural catastrophe experienced it just because they didin't think 'positively' enough. Bad things happen on this planet and none of us can avoid all of them.

ladyjane thanks for your kind words and appreciation. It means a lot to me being appreciated for my writings.

You are right, sometimes what happens is a consequence of our actions, sometimes as you say in USA s**t happens and the only thing to do is deal with it at the best of our possibilities. At the end the only thing we can control is our inner world, not the outside one. I like the concept of karma too and definitely agree that trying to be good to ourselves and others helps living a better life. As much as being prepared for bad things.

Okay I have read a couple of your hubs and I am a fan of your writing and the way you think. I totally agree with this hub. I watched the Secret a couple of times and couldn't really wrap my mind around the concept because of reasons that you mentioned in your hub. The person about to be executed can WISH all night that he gets pardoned but more likely than not he has a date with death.(especially if he lives in Texas, hee haw) Anyway, I am a believer of karma however and that things will come back to you and that you will reap what you sow. We can't explain all the bad things in the world such as world hunger and such but we can only hope to lead good lives and be good to one another so that we too will be blessed. Hope you have a good year and keep on writing, its fascinating.

There is a saying that goes like "Beware what you ask because you could receive it". On the other side it's human nature to try to improve. But as you said we could focus on important things to achieve, not just power or money or new gadgets. For me the most important thing is to improve my inner side, after having done that all the rest is a consequence.

There are many reasons why 99% of lottery winners loose their money, most of them because being not used to have a lot of money and being stressed because they don't know what to do with them they just try to go back to equilibrium, before having all that money. And anytime someone wins a lot of people arrives to exploit them.

    Thanks for the comment.

The power of attraction can be misused as well. If,for some reason you use it to attract things to you that go against your karmic account then you are setting yourself up for a disappointment sometime in the future, unless you can produce more than you consume. It's no different in life. You have to live within your means,or risk losing what you have.

Producing more than you comsume,is not easy ,if you are always trying to consume more.Ask,anyone who has filed for bankruptcy.

Remmember most big lottery winners lose most of what they have won, within a few years.Usually with nothing to show for it.

Yeah, well, I guess that if we could be able more times to look at life from a kind of detached point of view it's fun most of the times. Thanks Kirsten.

I agree with dohn121, you make some valid points about the law of attraction. I sometimes think past life karma or something similar must also work along side the law of attraction. Whatever the case isn't life fun sometimes? :D
