Things you might like to try for acid reflux
As someone who suffers with acid reflux, I’ve tried quite a number of foods. I guess when a lot of different foods give you heartburn you have to relearn how to eat.
I’ve read a book titled Eat Right For Your Blood Type. When it comes to changing your diet always seek a physician’s opinion first. Also don’t cut out too many foods as this could cause a deficiency. Anyway back to the eating right for your blood type.
I’m blood type A+. According to this book A+ blood types thrive on vegetarian diets. A+ blood types have low gastric acid. This made sense to me regarding the reflux. I do have a hiatus hernia but a friend of mine has one too and she rarely suffers with reflux. So it has to do with my diet and possible the fact that I might have low stomach acid. I did a little reading online and found out that acid reflux doesn’t always mean you have excess stomach acid. Sometimes the less acid you have the slower or harder the digestion. This means that the food stays in your stomach longer than normal.
A while ago I went to see an acupuncturist for my indigestion. The most painful point was the centre of my stomach. After my session the acupuncturist told me that my food tends to stay hours and hours in my stomach making me more prone to acid reflux. I’m not rash to make decisions; I do always seek out doctor’s advice before trying something new. My doctor said it could be possible but there would be evidence in my stools of undigested food if this was the case. But after a health check I was good to go ahead with the few things I wanted to change in my diet.
- The first thing I did was simple. I decided to buy organic food, especially fruits and vegetables. Fertilizers, pesticides, antibiotics given to animals could all be contributing to the reflux. I would like to believe this helped improve with the reflux.
- I cut out red meat completely. To be honest this wasn’t really hard as I’m not a big fan of red meat and it gives me the worst heartburn. I also read an article on the NHS website that too much red meat increases the risk of bowel cancer. That people who eat more than 90grams of red meat a day should cut down to 70g. A Big Mac is 70g of meat already in one seating. Also it takes 24-72 hours to digest red meat depending on your digestive system.
- I added more fish that included tuna, salmon, mackerel and sardines.
- I added a lot more fresh fruit and vegetables. Salads in summer and cooked vegetables in winter.
- I cut out oranges from my fruit list. For some reason I just got more reflux with them.
- Even though I can still eat tomatoes and onions I now use less of them. I noticed that eating well gets rid of the reflux altogether. Then I’d introduce tomatoes back into my diet and as long as I keep them to the minimum and not eat them everyday I was fine.
- A glass of barley grass every morning made a huge difference. See my post on barley grass.
- I eat less yeast based bread; yeast is the culprit for the bloating I sometimes feel. Breads I eat more of are, Irish Soda bread, Irish Stonebread, Rye bread.
- Eating less but often. Eating big meals tend to make the reflux worse so instead of three big meals a day I have six small meals a day. I snack on dried fruit, pumpkin seeds, rice cakes, oatcakes.
- I removed milk from my diet and replaced it with Soya milk, rice milk or goats milk. I still have yogurt. Dairy milk especially chocolate milk gave me bad stomach pain so instead I drink Soya chocolate Milk or Oat chocolate milk available at Holland and Barrett’s.
Two of my favourite meals
Gluten free pizza with goats cheese, spinach, red onion and sun dried tomatoes. Gluten free bases are available at supermarkets. The spinach must be cooked for a few minutes before placed on the pizza otherwise it will be dry.
Baked potato with tuna and a salad or cooked vegetables of your choice. A selection of cheese, biscuits and grapes for after.
Making these small changes have really helped me a lot and hopefully they might help other people. It’s all trial and error and everyone’s body chemistry is different. So far this has worked for me and I continue to experiment with different foods all the time.
