Thrush Natural Remedies: Learn How to Cure Thrush Quickly and Naturally

Updated on July 18, 2011

Baby Thrush, Breastfeeding Thrush, or Oral Thrush?

Stop Yeast Overgrowth Naturally

Are you suffering from thrush? Or is your baby suffering from thrush? Thrush is an increasingly common yeast infection that can plague babies, toddlers, breastfeeding moms and just about anyone who's vulnerable to yeast. Thrush is caused by an overgrowth of the yeast candida albicans.

It's important to realize that the presence of thrush in the mouth is a sign that a person's body is already out of balance. Just killing the yeast cells, with pharmaceuticals, or even natural remedies, is not enough. The imbalance still exists so the yeast will most likely grow back - if not as thrush - then in some other part of the body.

This imbalance also leaves a person susceptible to other infections as well - not just yeast. The key to curing thrush naturally and permanently is to kill the yeast naturally and also to cure the underlying deficiency or imbalance that allowed the yeast to grow out of control in the first place.

Thrush is most commonly observed in the mouth and can be seen as white patches of yeast overgrowth on the tongue, inside the cheeks or on the gums. Thrush can be painful. Babies suffering from thrush may be fussy, have difficulty feeding or be reluctant to nurse. The mouth is one of the most sensitive areas of the body so anyone suffering from thrush is likely to experience discomfort.

Breastfeeding mothers often develop breastfeeding thrush, a yeast infection of the nipples that can even migrate deep within the breast ducts, causing stabbing pains.

Prescription Drugs for Thrush: Do They Work? Are They Safe?

When I first encountered thrush myself, I immediately turned to the internet for a solution. However, I was surprised that even midwives (who are generally holistic-minded) were recommending prescription anti-fungals for thrush. With 15 years of experience in the natural health industry, I already knew that prescription anti-fungals are often highly toxic and are not even very effective in many cases. There was no way I was going to give a prescription drug to my newborn baby!

To give you an idea of the risks, Diflucan, one of the commonly prescribed drugs for infant thrush, is known to cause liver damage, seizures, even death. Why would I give this to a newborn? No way.

Nystatin is another commonly prescribed drug for thrush. It's not as toxic as Diflucan, but has problems of its own. First of all, Nystatin is ineffective over 50% of the time. Second, it can actually make the thrush even worse! It does this in two ways: 1.) it's mixed with sugar, which promotes yeast overgrowth and 2.) it can cause the yeast to mutate into a form that's more difficult to cure.

Of course, as I mentioned earlier, neither of these drugs do a thing to stop the yeast from just growing back. Worse, they weaken the body and the immune system, leaving your or your child even more susceptible to yeast.

Gentian Violet and Other Home Remedies to Avoid

Gentian violet is one of the most commonly recommended home remedies for thrush, but this a remedy I would personally stay away from for a number of reasons. First of all, gentian violet is not actually a natural remedy, it's a petrol product. Gentian violet has also been linked to increased long term risk of oral cancer. On top of that, the FDA has deemed gentian violet as an unacceptable additive for animal feed! Gentian violet can cause mouth sores and ulcers as well.

It's not necessary to use any remedy for thrush that's remotely dangerous or unsafe. My own frustrating experiences with infant thrush and breastfeeding thrush led me to develop and completely safe and natural treatment for thrush that works quickly and permanently. (You can read more about it on my website,

Colloidal silver is another remedy I'd steer clear of for thrush; as a metal, colloidal silver can quickly build up in the body. Agyria is a medical condition caused by ingestion of silver that permanently darkens the skin. Tea tree oil and oregano oil are other herbs which are useful in some cases, but not appropriate for infants, children or adults with weakened kidneys. (Tea tree oil should only ever be used topically.)

So, What Really Works? The Holistic Approach

The holistic approach is really the only truly safe and effective way to cure any kind of thrush. It's crucial to re-balance the body's natural defenses and to kill the yeast safely, in a way that doesn't cause further problems. The world of drugs generally leads from one problem to another. For example, you get yeast because of antibiotics, so you take anti-fungals for the yeast, then you end up with migraines or other problems, and the list goes on. You don't want to go that route and you certainly don't want to subject your child to the negative chain-reaction of misusing pharmaceuticals.

Yeast is everywhere, so while it's important to practice some basic hygiene while you're treating thrush, you don't have to boil your bras or change your sheets every day or follow any other extremely difficult hygiene practices I've seen recommended for thrush. The key is to kill the yeast safely and naturally, build up your immunity, and re-balance your body so that the yeast will be gone and stay gone. Not only that, this method helps protect you, or your child, from all kinds of infections - not just yeast.

On the other hand, if you just kill the yeast - whether with drugs or something else - what happens? Either the yeast comes back or it will be something else. Chronic sinus infections, or ear infections, or digestive problems, etc. Trust me, it's more than worth the little bit of effort to cure the problem correctly the first time around!

Firstly, make an appointment to your GYN. Make sure that there isn't a serious issue there first. If all that checks out then look into some natural changes in your lifestyle.

For me I started looking into fruits and vegetables that help. Grapefruit and pineapples help a lot. There are also vitamins that help but none really showed any type of change for me.

Then after spending a few hours on the net I came across this natural supplement for women's needs and care called balance complex for women.

I've been let down before by supplements promising the world. This type of issue is especially embarrassing and I'm just thrilled this has been working so far.

Poor form to mislead people to buy a product. Your link was under home remedies not "purchase something that can't be found in a pantry". Shame on you!

The information on Diflucan was helpful but no info on how to cure infant thrush. Left me feeling just as lost as I did before I came here. You shouldn't put learn how to cure thrush, just learn how to waste your time!
