A great holiday destination

Experiences in a new country

Fourteen years in Croatia, and I have learned so much from this experience.

The many years taught me about another culture, the people and of the different climate. What to do for a living has shown me another lifestyle.

A foreign country and is now my adoptive country. I would like to share more about my new country.

It has been a difficult ride through the years. I discovered what works for me and I go with that.

Croatia has many popular sports, but I am not a fan of any of the local teams.

The following sports are popular in Croatia:

Handball.

Basketball.

Football.

Water polo.

It is autumn and much cooler and rains almost every evening and sunny in the day. Usually this time of year is cooler with rain. September is a sign of the disappearance of summer.

In this weather I can sleep better and relax in my time.

I have a small business in working with tourists.

A small country and based on tourism so that has given me an opportunity to work with and to meet many people from around the world.

Selling souvenirs, local honey, ice-cream and refreshments.

During this time I have met several people and of different nationalities.

Business opens from ten in the morning until seven in the evening with small breaks in between hours same as the local castle. The old castle attracts many tourists and is growing each year.

The life I have is less stressful and a very healthy lifestyle.

A natural way of life and self-sufficient.

Some people would give up what they have to live my way of life here, in the most southern part of Croatia.

It makes me appreciate my way of life more when I hear that from other people.

Lots has changed and I see it more now than in the past.

The people are different and the culture is different too.

I focus on what I need to make my life better and happier.

Everything in my life has changed from one country to another and I remain positive and happy.

The most important is to be happy with what I have not with what is out of reach.

A new lifestyle and over a decade in Croatia has taught me to enjoy each day to the fullest.

I decided to be mentally strong and to carry on with this foreign lifestyle.

Thinking of the best brought me the positive living in a foreign country.

On some days it feels easier and other days it feels the most difficult.

I sometimes feel my saddest but I don't stay in that mood for a long period.

The pieces in my life have broken and I picked up those pieces and put them together in the good times shared with loved ones.

Everything is still foreign to me!

I feel that way because I am different in many parts of my life.

Acceptance is hard from both sides.

In such times it is better to focus on what I need.

I can't carnage the way everything happened and dwell in the past but I can go forward and make life happier and healthier.

The frustrating moments no longer make me upset and angry.

I ignore what I know is not worth my time and energy.

There are all types of people in this world and it is up to me to get on with these types or to push them away.

In my case, I chose to be with the positive people and to take the negative people as an experience.

I learned to be independent and to grow from within.

The hard days taught me to move on and not to give up.

The journey I chose is different and showed what I am capable of, if I had no idea what to do in complicated situations.

Croatia is still a developing country and that has set me back for a long time. Documentations are like a never ending story. The poor understanding of how to open small businesses can be frustrating if we don't have the proper requirements.

In time I am sure it will all work out.

The local people tend to do what others do and need what others have.

I have noticed such behaviors and ignored it.

Nothing can affect me in this place. I have my own ideas and choose to expand on my small business.

Tourism in Croatia has grown over the years and that shows me a good path to success.

The seasonal lifestyle is a good experience and I have learned how to make the unique liquors from the different fruit.

Figs are delicious dried or fresh and in the form of a liquor.

Cherries are sweet and also used to make liquors.

Walnuts are used to make liquors too, the skin of the Walnut gives the very dark color to the liquor.

The summer time is open to many experiences and I enjoy taking part in certain traditional activities.

The local fruit including plums and pomegranate are some of my favorite fruit.

Fruit and vegetables grow best in the summer.

Cabbages, and broccoli grow best in the cold winter.

Onions and leeks are planted in November and takes at least half a year to grow.

I prefer the summer vegetables and fruit.

Gardening is a great time to relax and to form new ideas of what to plant and where to plant.

Often I think of planting new flowers and bulbs.

Certain bulbs grow with out too much care.

It takes time to have a nice garden with fruit and flowers.

Not much of anything else grows here in the winter.

Most trees lose their leaves leaving the views looking bare and dull.

The tall pine trees, and olive trees don't lose their leaves.

Rosemary grows throughout the year.

The many other herbal plants up in the mountains and around our home don't grow in cold weather.

Plans are always changing and progressing each day.

A small community and everyone knows everybody else.

It is nice to be kind to one another and to be happy with people's successes.

I believe in having positive people around me and to grow from all experiences.

Everything in life is an experience and people need to understand mistakes teach us to grow stronger.

I have had to cope with the jealous, envious, and the poor mentality of some people.

Through these times I saw my true friends and realized that only I can stand by me, for always.

What I learned and continue learning is about the people's behaviors and conversations.

The way they approach their daily activities and of what keeps us apart. Culture is different, mentalities, religion, traditions, language, and so much more, such as; myths and beliefs, and the changes that allowed for such appearances.

Through all the years in Croatia, I have battled and struggled and still smiled daily. A smile is contagious and I found that give me a clear mind.

Note:

Always learn more about the foreign country you choose to make new life in and focus on the positive thoughts that will make you feel good each day.

It can be a good experience or a bad experience. Only, you will know once you have made that choice. You are affected by the choices you make in life.

Sometimes a move to a different part of the country or even to a new job can be like entering a foreign country. Each family, community, and work place has their own culture, habits, and customs. I like what you said about being patient with ourselves as we make these adjustments. That is something that I need right now in my life, as I am in the middle of making an employment transition. Things are very different with my new position, and I need to allow myself time to get re-acquainted with myself!

I enjoyed learning a little about Croatia and your experience as an ex-pat. We also live in a foreign country and although challenging, feel our life is lower stress than it was in the U.S. I agree that it requires positive thinking and acceptance on our part to live in a foreign country. Thank you for sharing!
