Tips for Becoming Self-Motivated

Updated on December 3, 2010

What is Self Motivation?

Self-motivation can be very powerful. The ability to get oneself energized to complete a number of different tasks is very important. However, it is not unusual for people to feel somewhat lax about doing even the simplest things. This can be quite a problem for people on a number of levels.  Self-motivation is necessary on so many levels in order to be successful at both small and large endeavors. Getting the necessary kick start that is needed in order to do the things that are desired is possible. The following are some factors that people can help people to become more motivated.

The 4 Key Factors

  1. Make a Detailed Plan - Many times people are not as motivated as they can be because they do not know what they want to do. It can be hard to move forward if you are unsure about a direction or choice. Thus, it is very important for people to take the time to develop a plan for the things that they would like to do. No matter how small or large the endeavor may be having a plan is key to being able to effectively complete tasks. Many people simply become motivated by being able to check off the items on their list. Thus, having a plan is key to being motivated.
  2. Commitment - Self-motivation requires a certain amount of commitment to yourself and your personal ideals. In order to have the ability to accomplish anything it will be necessary for individuals to commit to themselves. This is in many ways similar to making a promise to follow through on personal goals and commitments. People that are committed to their personal growth are more likely to make decisions that benefit them both on a short term and long term basis. Commitment to the self is one of the best ways to become more self-motivated.
  3. Rewards - One very interesting way in which people can effectively keep themselves motivated is to occasionally give themselves a reward. Life can’t always be work and no play. Only focusing on results can sometimes sabotage a person’s efforts. Thus, it is very important that people take the time reward themselves for a job well done. In general, people respond well to receiving a reward or form of praise for a job well done. There is no reason why people should not be able to give themselves this very same treatment. It is a great way for people to keep themselves motivated in a number of ways.
  4. Support - Yes, it is true that having support can help to keep people self-motivated. When people know that there are others that have their best interest at heart and want to see them do well this can be very instrumental in helping people stay motivated. While having the strength and resolve to do things alone is important, the significance of having a strong support system cannot be underestimated.

In all, self-motivation is the key to being able to really do anything in life. Being self-motivated makes it possible for people to get things done no matter how trivial or important.

      Hey FGual,

I'm glad you like the advice here. I think there are a lot of advice out there but the trouble is to make it simple enough for people to follow.

Great advice here, so often we get bogged down by an option glut. People need to prioritize and divide goals into small steps.
