To Treat or To Heal ? The ultimate question

Updated on January 10, 2015

What's all the confusion about ?

With all the diseases there are now, wouldn't we all love to know which way is the best way to address the issues ? I know I would, so in that I am going to put my medical knowledge and also holistic knowledge together to help you understand how things, in the body, works. By now we have all heard the claims of diet and disease. The connection between the S.A.D and disease. Can our bodies heal themselves as we provide the proper nutrition ? Of course this is a defensive topic, but in this article we are going to look at what exactly we know and what we are not so sure of. The S.A.D or Standard American Diet is full of processed foods and also additives that the body doesn't need, nor know what to do with, so as we carry on in our daily, busy lives what exactly are we doing to our bodies? With disease on the rise, and at the highest level we have seen, maybe one would venture to wonder why ? What has happened? Has the body weakened over the years allowing disease to thrive ?

What happened ?

First off before we can look at today's food we must first look at where we are today compared to 50 years ago. I am sure, like me, we have all heard the stories of walking 2 miles to school, uphill both ways. Also we have heard the countless tales of the women in the kitchen canning all the harvest goods, to ensure they had enough to carry them through the long, hard winter months. Our great- grand dads were working the fields to make sure that the harvest was plenty for the family and also the occasional friend or someone in need. That needed the meal to survive from famine. Well let's look at what we are encountering now. Most of us have never ran a tiller or planted a garden. We rush off to the grocery store to purchase the items we need. We women are not at home anymore, we are out working the 9-5 to make ends meet. Maybe to simply be able to give our children the newest gadget that is on the market. We often times pick up Mc Donald's on the way home because we are simply to tired to cook dinner. Much less can goods that we have grown with our own hands. We put our trust in people we have never met. Also trust that they have our best interest in mind as we live our busy lives. But do they? By now we have all heard the conflicting interest in Monsanto and their ability to splice a seed and add chemicals that will blow up a bugs stomach, but tell us that it is ok for us to feed our dearest families. Would you eat or drink round up ? Not only Monsanto, but then you have the meat farmers and of course they want the most " bang for the buck". They are capable of injecting the animals with steroids and antibiotics and producing a larger, more appealing piece of meat, that you are sure to love. Rather you look at this and call me crazy, or look at this in awe with new material presented you are sure to agree that all the pollutants are no good for the human body.

Chronic Disease

Chronic Disease is rising, as you think you can probably name at least one person you know and love that has a chronic disease. This being said why is chronic disease soaring ? First lets take a look at what the CDC has to say about chronic disease;

Chronic Diseases: The Leading Causes of Death and Disability in the United States

Chronic diseases and conditions—such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, obesity, and arthritis—are among the most common, costly, and preventable of all health problems.

  • As of 2012, about half of all adults—117 million people—have one or more chronic health conditions. One of four adults has two or more chronic health conditions.1
  • Seven of the top 10 causes of death in 2010 were chronic diseases. Two of these chronic diseases—heart disease and cancer—together accounted for nearly 48% of all deaths.2
  • Obesity is a serious health concern. During 2009–2010, more than one-third of adults, or about 78 million people, were obese (defined as body mass index [BMI] ≥30 kg/m2). Nearly one of five youths aged 2–19 years was obese (BMI ≥95th percentile).3
  • Arthritis is the most common cause of disability.4 Of the 53 million adults with a doctor diagnosis of arthritis, more than 22 million say arthritis causes them to have trouble with their usual activities.5
  • Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, lower limb amputations other than those caused by injury, and new cases of blindness among adults.6

well as you can see half the population has some type of chronic disease. That is breathtaking, to say the least. It would make you stop and think. Let's look at more facts;

Senior Care Facts

  • Today there are over 43.1 million adults aged 65 and older in the United States; by 2040, that number will rise to 79.7 million.
  • Seniors represent 13.7% of the United States population, about 1 in 7 Americans.
  • Nearly 92% of older adults have at least one chronic condition, and 77% have at least two.
  • Some type of disability (e.g. difficulty in hearing, vision, cognition, ambulation, self-care, or independent living) was reported by 36% of adults aged 65 and over in 2012.

It is obvious that we, as a nation are headed in the wrong direction. Why is chronic disease on the rise ? Do you ever sit back and think that at this rate, we will be extinct within a century or two. We all just continue to take the pills the doctors prescribe and not think twice about the real problem. After all that is what we have been told and that is what our doctors are telling us. As we continue on our merry ways our children actually have a shorter life expectancy than we do. We are the smartest nation but the sickest nation. How is this possible well now we are going to look at the treatment. When you have a pain what do you do ? Let's say that the pain last for a month or 2 or even a year. What then we run to the smartest people we know. Our doctors, but are they so smart ? The typical American has never went to med school so how do we know what the doctors are taught ? We trust them with our lives, but yet know so little about them. What makes them more qualified to tell us what is wrong with us over our own selves? Because this is what we have been taught our entire lives. But shouldn't we know ourselves better than any doctor? Let's see we are going to play a game, Let's say that I have a belch that burns my throat and causes my chest to hurt, you are the doctor and I am the patient so I have came in with this problem and you have some options, you can do farther testing or just write me a prescription that will lower the stomach acid I have, whatare you going to do ? Well chances are you are going to write me a prescription for, lets say nexium, so now I am going to go fill this and take it daily for the rest of my life, nexium by the way, runs $636 a month for the average prescription and if you are lucky enough to have insurance then you may get off with a $50 co-pay.

So I am off with my nexium and the first week I feel great. Then I develop abdominal pain, this doesn't reside in a week so I am back in the office, Doctor the nexium has helped the burning but now I have abdominal pain and dizziness. Doctor I just don't know what to do, so what are you going to do doctor? Well if you are a real doctor you are probably going to give me 2 more prescriptions lets say Dicyclomine ( for abdominal spasms) and meclizine ( dizzy medicine). So now in just 2 weeks I am now taking 3 drugs on a daily basis. I am going to tell you doctor that abdominal pain and dizziness are side effects of nexium. Now I am on 3 drugs and this can go on and on what if the Dicyclomine and meclizine cause side effects? Then you, doctor, will add a few more drugs to my list to take on a daily basis. Why not just tell me that I have heartburn and that can be corrected by the foods I eat ? Because doctor you have not been taught about remedies that lead to a cure. You have a drug book that has a list of drugs and symptoms and with every symptom you offer a new drug for me to take daily. This is the way western medicine works and the drug companies are raking in millions to treat your side effects.

Chronic disease and the S.A.D

As we seen earlier, doctors write prescriptions and continue to write prescriptions for every symptom you have. Yes, you feel it is helpful but then you end up taking 5 different medications in a years time. So lets look at this differently, We know our bodies better than anyone and we also know we have triggers. For instance, Lets say I have Chron's disease. What is the medical vs holistic approaches? I can go to my doctor and get all the test and prescriptions. That is the typical thing to do. But lets say this has gradually came on and I have decided that when I eat bread it makes it hurt worse. My morning coffee I add milk and sugar and that is for sure to send me running to the bathroom and my stomach hurts real bad after a big meal that contains bread and milk. The population has choices, if you are reacting to certain foods chances are that you have an intolerance for that food which leads the immune system to attack the intestines when you eat gluten and lactose. Why not adjust your diet to exclude these items? Because we are so spoiled that we would rather eat what we want and take a pill as to deprive our taste buds. The American diet is full of processed foods,( anything you can't grow), it is laced with round up and other pesticides, herbicides and what ever pollutants the manufacture wants to add to trick your taste buds into believing chemicals taste good. Well with chronic disease on the rise one might look at their diet to rid themselves of these chemicals and focus more on a healthy whole foods lifestyle. That benefits the body and is free from the toxins. No, I know every American can't maintain a garden, but you can opt for organic foods that are not GMO ( laced with round up). Grass- fed beef and free-range chicken. It is obvious that we as a nation are sick because of the food we eat and the life-styles we lead.

What is my diagnosis ?

I have abdominal pain after I drink coffee and this just started after my gallbladder was removed

Treatment vs Curing

Treatment is what the medical field offers, for every symptom they have a pill to alleviate the dis-comfort. Treatment is like putting blinders on so you don't have to watch your house burn down. Treatment mask symptoms and doesn't cure anything. You can put duct tape over a service engine light and though you don't see the light, doesn't mean the car doesn't have issues. It can still overheat and blow the motor. It would have been easier to take the time to add water versus replacing the engine. Same with the body, just because you cover the symptoms with pills doesn't mean that your engine isn't running hot. Curing, curing means to get rid of the source of the symptoms. You know your body and you know the causes, if you really think about it, you know. If you eat spicy foods and you feel sick, stop eating spicy foods. Curing means that you address the underlying problems. The underlying problem probably comes from your lifestyle. The average American lifestyle is full of stress, processed foods and environmental toxins. When we get rid of the added toxins, our body can heal. But you can't continue to pour gasoline onto a fire and expect it not to get out of control. Curing starts with the person in the mirror, not a pill that the doctor gave you. Lets look at this where everyone can understand it, if you smash your finger, it will heal you don't run to the doctor you "baby" it and don't smash it again. However, if you continue to smash your finger, your nail is going to fall off and have to regrow the whole nail. So stop smashing your finger and it will heal. The body has a great immune system that is full of little soldiers, millions of little soldiers that have only one goal in there life, you ! These cells know exactly what your body needs. You will never have a nexium deficiency, truth is you probably don't have enough stomach acid. Your body knows exactly what you need. You have to nourish the body and then you will see your dis-ease reverse. You have 3000 NK cells at any given time. 9( If you have a good immune system) these NK cells have the ability to take a virus, bacteria or even cancer and devour it , use the cells remains to create new cells that are resistant to these virus' and bacteria and that is how you develop titers or immunity. The immune system, when functioning properly can keep you healthy. The problem is that we American's have over burdened immune systems. We are consistently taking in toxins, we are exposed to viruses and bacteria daily. We are not feeding the body but our taste buds. We inhale refined sugar and fructose which packs on the pounds and weakens the immune system leading to chronic dis-ease and we are a toxic nation and we are adding more toxicity with pharmaceuticals. You have to build your body and replenish the deficiencies and remove the toxins. Thank God you have a liver and 2 kidneys that will remove the toxins, you have to drink water to flush them out of the system. if not, they build up and lead to dis-ease and even the ultimate dis-ease, cancer. Yes, I believe that when a lifestyle changes for the better and you feed your body and not your taste buds you can even cure the ultimate dis-ease, cancer, yes I do believe this and know 4 people that have done just that. Eat for health

Maybe you are thinking you would love to change but you aren't sure how. Small steps are the best steps. Start by buying grass fed or free range meats. Then add the organic fruits and vegetables. To rebuild you need to eat an 80% raw food diet. This can be a grilled chicken salad or whatever you choose for yourself there are several recipes for 80% raw food diet. Check out Dr Josh Axe or Dr Joseph Mercola. These are both doctors and have several videos and articles they have written to the health of the general public. You also will need to remove the environmental toxins, the best way to start this is by using organic cleaners, vinegar works great on anything and if you don't want the smell add some lemon juice or essential oils for a fragrance you enjoy. Get a water filtration system on your home. Fluoride and chlorine are known cancer causing agents and you drink, bathe and cook with it daily. You can't expect to heal overnight, you didn't get sick overnight. It will take a couple of weeks for you to notice you are healing. You may experience a healing crisis, this is where your body is releasing the toxins and causing you to not feel so good. This will pass in a few days just keep up with your water intake. You should divide your weight In half and that is how many ounces of water you should drink. For instance I weigh 150 lbs so I need to drink 75 ounces of water daily to maintain. If I exercise or do extra activity you should add water accordingly. If you don't like plain water add the juice from an organic lemon to add flavor and the wonderful benefits of the lemon. it is alkalizing to the body and also offers antioxidants and minerals to your water. If you can't grow it you probably shouldn't eat it, is a good rule of thumb. Here's to your health.

Sum it up

We have all been taught to follow the doctors orders when we should have been more focuses on " an apple a day keeps the doctor away". Food can be your best friend or your worse enemy. Food today can be linked to a host of dis-ease and intolerances. It is important to pay attention to your body and adjust accordingly. Your body will tell you what it needs you have to learn to understand the body. For example, if you are craving chocolate, chances are you are lacking magnesium. Your body doesn't ask for sugar, however, organic cocoa is high in magnesium and antioxidants. Read the symptoms, if you have a headache, you are probably dehydrated and need water not aleve or Tylenol. It all makes perfect sense once you realize you are the healer of your body, not a doctor or a pill. Use good whole foods and see where you go. The importance of a healthy diet is coming at us full force. When 1 out of 2 American's have a chronic dis-ease, it is calling for a wake-up and realization that we can not be healthy on sugar, roundup, steroids and antibiotics. We need food, nutrients and I am not talking supplement I am talking lifestyle changes. Food can either feed health or feed dis-ease you choose.
