Top Causes of Back Pain

Not only is back pain one of the most common reasons for missed work, and visits to the doctors’ but it is also a major cause of disability in the world. In the USA alone, people spend an estimated fifty billion dollars ($50 billion) every single year in treating and managing back pains.

In this post, we shall explore some of the top causes of back pain. But before we begin, let’s examine what constitutes the human back, and some symptoms of back pain.

What is the human back?

The human back is the part of the body that stretches from the buttocks to the back of the neck and shoulders. Usually, it is divided into three sections: the lower, mid and upper back, the back is made up of ligaments, tendons, muscles, bones and sensitive nerves.

So how do I know if I have back pains? The most common symptoms of back pain include the following:

  • Stiffness of the back
  • Muscle spasms
  • A feeling of tenderness over the muscles of the back.

It’s important to mention that almost anyone can experience back pain, although when it’s frequent, there’s could be something you are doing wrongly or you may be suffering from an underlying condition. I’ll cover these in the remainder of the post.

Causes of back pain

Frequent back pain is caused by a number of factors, one of which is assuming a bad posture whether you are sitting or standing. Those who are used to an office lifestyle are probably familiar with sitting in a swivel chair behind the computer desk for several hours. If we don’t sit properly, in a way that relieves pressure on the spine, we end up feeling pain in the back.

Posture is a very important factor when it comes to frequent back pains so you have to check your posture if you really are serious about relief. For avid sleepers, sleeping on old and less steady mattresses can cause frequent back pains because the spine is placed under enormous pressure that you don’t see when sleeping.

An irritation of the muscles of the back can also lead to frequent pack pains. As I stated early on, the back is composed of muscles that contract and relax to enable us make movements with our backs. Sometimes, however, the muscles get sore due to a number of reasons including car accidents and sports injuries (from weight lifting, in particular). Therefore, in order to relief pain at the back, it is important to rest the back for a day or two so that sore muscles can heal. You could also apply heat or cold to ease the pain.

Activities that break or crack the spine can cause frequent pains in the back. As I stated early on, the spine is the major bone of the back and it consists of dozens bones arranged on top of each other. Falling from a distant height, hitting your back against an object, or getting involved in a motor accident can exert enormous pressure on the spine, causing it to either crack or break. When this happens, the nerves in the back pick up and transmit pain signals to the brain, causing you to sense the pains.

Finally, not exercising regularly can cause frequent back pains. Exercise routines such as yoga and core body workouts introduce a great deal of flexibility into the muscles and bones of the back. Flexibility reduces the likelihood of cracks and breakages in the bones of the back as well as tear of the ligaments and other tissues of the back. Therefore if you want to reduce frequent back pains, you should introduce some yoga into your daily exercise routine.

      My husband has back pains often. What helps him most are the exercises he was taught by a therapist. No pain meds and no surgery so far.
