The Horror of Toxoplasmosis Gondii Parasite In Pregancy. Our Story.
The Horror Of Toxoplasmosis Gondii Parasite.
The horror of toxoplasmosis is a very true statement. Our daughter was tested for this infection when she went for her first baby check with her second child. We were all in shock when it came back positive. There are only about 3,000 cases in the US each year.
Now what? They had to send her to a specialist and the only thing they could do was put her on an experimental drug that had to be flown in from another state. She was on this drug through the whole pregnancy.
It was suggested to her that she could terminate the pregnancy. Ending the baby's life wasn't something she could do. We are a family that doesn't believe in abortion. I know my daughter worried about having a disabled baby. Anyone would that was going through this. The big problem not knowing what kind of disability the baby would be born with.
To this day we do not know where she got the infection. She did have a cat but the cat had been tested and did not have toxoplasmosis parasite. She stopped cleaning cat boxes when they knew they wanted another baby. Our son-in-law did all the cleaning of the cat box.
It will always be a mystery as to where she got the parasite. According to the CDC there are 750 deaths each year from Toxoplasmosis of those half are from contaminated meat. Think before you eat that raw meat. It's the third leading cause of third food borne deaths in the US.
I have been contacted by Monsters Inside Me show wanting to put her story on the show. Our daughter declined. I watch he show often and it is very interesting.
I recently watch a show with the Kosowski family. Their child has very bad eyesight from this disease. His mother believes she got the disease from eating rare lamb.
How is toxoplasmosis gondii spread?
Toxo is a disease caused from a parasite. About half of infections come from eating raw or undercooked infected meat, but you can also get the parasite in other ways, such as eating unwashed contaminated produce, drinking contaminated water, or handling contaminated soil, cat litter, or meat and then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes. You can get it from drinking raw goat's milk.
They are saying now if you have an indoor cat even the cat littler is not a danger.
Wild meat can also have the parasite. We eat venison here so who knows if that could have caused it. We always cook our meat through.
When gardening always wear gloves do not touch your face often toxoplasmosis can come from working in the garden. Something our daughter did often.
Many people get toxoplasmosis and never get sick from it. You can't get this from another person but mother can pass it to unborn baby.
If your like my daughter you won't have symptoms. Some people have flu like symptons. She could remember one time feeling sick after eating a hamburger a fast food place but has no idea if that could have been where she got this parasite .
- sore throat
- lymph nodes might be swollen
Our daughter had to go through amniocentesis test. We were all worried about the baby, even though test showed she was ok. Thank God, she was born healthy and is a very healthy, beautiful, smart teenager now.
Some hospitals do not test for toxoplasmosis but expecting mothers should insist they be checked.
This is what we learned when we found out about the toxoplasmosis.
If your baby has toxoplasmosis it can be from mild to severe. They even think that toxoplasmosis can cause miscarriage, stillbirth and death soon after birth. Toxoplasmosis can affect your baby's brain; can cause cerebral palsy, and epilepsy. It can affect the eyes, sometimes blindness. Toxoplasmosis can cause enlarged liver and jaundice, an enlarged spleen, a low platelet count, rashes and heart or lung infection, and enlarged lymph nodes. Babies with toxoplasmosis, infected later in pregnancy, can look normal at birth but may develop serious problems later, vision impairment, blindness and development delays years later.
This is why our grandchild had to be checked. Like I stated our daughter was put on experimental antibiotics and so was the baby after she was born. The first year after birth she was watched closely by her doctor.
Our state is Wisconsin and when our daughter had her first baby she was tested for toxoplasmosis (2 years before) and the test was clear. Then she was tested again with the second baby and toxoplasmosis was found.
Some states test for toxoplasmosis and some don't and sometimes it goes just by the clinic you are going to. The clinic in our county does not check for it. You may have to ask your doctor for this test but I sure would. It's well worth it. If it's caught early in pregnancy there are medications that can work. They told our daughter that toxoplasmosis is rare in the US more common in third world countries.
I am not a doctor so I can’t explain toxoplasmosis in detail. More detailed information can be found on Mayo Clinic website with information coming from doctors. If your planning on getting pregnant please check into getting tested and don’t let a doctor talk you out of having a test.

Our daugher was given antibiotic spiramycin. This drug will help keep baby from becoming infected. The drug is used in Europe to treat toxoplasmosis but is an experimental drug in the US.
House cats can be tested for antibodies to toxoplasmosis. Cats that have a positive antibody test means that the cat is very likely immune and likely not to be the source of infection. Cats should be tested before you become pregnant. The vet told our daughter that they had tested many cats for toxoplasmosis and it was rare to find it in any cats.
My daughter has a very clean house. She is careful to wash hands often and cleans fruit with soap and water just like I always do. She sanitizes her kitchen often.
You try the best you can to keep from getting things like this but it is not always easy. Every time I touch a cart in the store I think of the gems on it, not only that what about that little pen everyone uses at the check out. Think of the filth on that thing.
Our daughter and granddaughter are both doing very well and are both healthy. Our granddaughter is a very beautiful happy teenager with lots of friends. She makes straight A's on her report card. She was one of the kids picked to put the wreath on the unknown soldiers grave. Kids have to have good grades to be able to do that. You see the picture of her doing that on my hub http://moonlake.hubpages.com/hub/My-Great-Great-Grandfather-Joseph-Fleming-Thomason. She has no signs of her toxoplasmosis.
