Effective treatment for lifestyle diseases

Lifestyle disease describes ailments found in societies with increasing wealth and sedentary lifestyle. They include chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and physical conditions such as cancer, diabetes, coronary heart diseases, Alzheimer's, asthma, obesity, hypertension, alcoholism and gout. It has been predicted that as diseases of poverty decline, longevity increases and as lifestyles change, immunity-related disease and certain types of allergies will become more prevalent. In 2008, nearly 80 percent of deaths due to NCDs - heart attacks, strokes, chronic lung diseases, cancers and diabetes - occurred.

Cause of disease: A research conducted in China studied the relationship between the consumption of animal products and diseases such as cancer, diabetes, coronary heart disease, obesity, autoimmune disorders, osteoporosis, degenerative brain disease and macular degeneration. It found that people who eat a vegetarian diet and avoid animal products such as beef, pork, poultry, fish, eggs, processed food and refined carbohydrates, have a lower risk of developing lifestyle diseases. The study stressed that lack of physical exercise and excessive use of alcohol and tobacco were other definite risk factors. It also pointed out that vegetarians need Vitamin B12 supplement and greater exposure to sunshine to maintain adequate levels of Vitamin D. Eating green vegetables and fresh fruits especially colourful ones, rich in carotenoids, increase antioxidants in the body which fight cell damage and prevent lifestyle disorders.

Modern medicine has an answer to lifestyle disorders such as in the form of anti hypertensive drugs, immunosuppressants, and chemotherapy, but they have their side effects.

How Homeopathy scores: Homeopathy, however, scores over other systems of medicine in treating lifestyle disorders. Homeopathy treats every patient as unique as a complete case history is first drawn up by the physician before prescribing medication. Homeopathic medicines, taken in the right form and potency, have been known to reverse the disease and improve body resistance.

Another plus: there's no suppression of symptoms or side-effects even after prolonged usage. But for the treatment to be effective in the long run, one has to exercise restraint in food and drink. Too much salt, tobacco and alcohol, rich or junk food and mindless snacking, all need to be avoided. Therefore, the success of the treatment depends, to a large extent, on the cooperation of the patient.
