Vitamin D is an oil soluble vitamin; this means that you need to eat oily things in order to absorb it into your body. You can get vitamin D in several ways, you can sit in the sun (5 to 10 minutes a day) and your body will make vitamin D from sunlight or you can eat it in your foods, or take it as a supplement.

Why is vitamin D important? There are many reasons that vitamin D is important, our bodies need it for so many reasons. First vitamin D is important to body functions like the absorption of calcium, control of cell growth, bone development, proper immune system functioning, and the easing of inflammation in the body.

What happens when we have a vitamin D deficiency? This can lead to a compromised immune system, which can lead to cancers, poor hair growth, and a weakening of the muscles and bones called osteomalacia. However, on the other hand too much vitamin D can be harmful as well as not enough.

What happens when you consume too much vitamin D? It can lead to the body absorbing to much calcium which then leads to an increased risk of kidney stones, and heart attacks. Currently doctors recommend 600 IU (international units) per day, toxicity is considered to be 100,000 IUs per day.

What foods contain vitamin D? vitamin D can be found in many different places, fish oils, fatty fish, beef liver, egg yolks, cheese, and some mushrooms, not to mention cod liver oil, fortified cereals, oysters, fortified soy products, fortified dairy, ham, sausages, and salami.

When you are consuming enough vitamin D you will optimize your body’s metabolism of calcium, and phosphorus. Vitamin D can help to prevent type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, insulin resistance, congestive heart failure, stroke, and heart attack.

The benefits of vitamin D are many; it can help to prevent osteoporosis, maintain bone integrity, and prevent muscle weakness. Along with all of that it regulated the immune system responses, regulates blood pressure, and helps to support cognitive function, especially in older persons.

Are you having symptoms of chronic fatigue? The deficiency of vitamin D may cause this, as well as the following cancers: bladder, colon, breast, rectal, prostate, and ovarian.

What are some of the symptoms of a vitamin D deficiency?

  • Chronic fatigue

  • Muscle aches and pains

  • Bone pain

  • Frequent falls (especially in older persons)

  • Frequent bone fractures

  • Soft bones

  • Asthma in children

  • Stunted growth in children

  • Lowered immunity

  • Impaired cognitive function

  • Fatigue

  • Depression

  • Lack of sun exposure

  • Presence of an autoimmune disease

What are some of the factors that contribute to a deficiency of vitamin D?

  • Breastfeeding

  • Pregnancy

  • Insufficient sun exposure

  • Insufficient dietary fat

  • Health conditions (parathyroid gland or kidney issues)

  • Inability to absorb dietary fat

  • Aging

  • Genetic susceptibility

Some studies support the fact that vitamin D can help to prevent Multiple Sclerosis, it seems that MS is much less prevalent when you get closer to the equator ~ where they have more sunlight. It is also helpful in the recovery of Tuberculosis; it helps the sufferer to recover more quickly ~ this was reported in 2012 in the Preceding of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS)

In the winter the vitamin D levels in women are at risk of causing depression and women with arthritis, diabetes and other chronic conditions are more susceptible to problems involving these issues.

Over the years the world has changed a great deal, once we worked outside and were given plenty of opportunity to get sunlight and for our bodies to make vitamin D, but now many people work inside and this prevents them from getting the sunlight that we need. In some cultures they wear a great deal of clothing that prevents sun exposure, these things have brought about a reduction in vitamin D and with that more vitamin D deficient diseases and problems.

In the western world most of our vitamin D comes from fortified foods, this is the artificially added vitamin D. most milk is fortified with vitamin D this was to help to combat rickets in many countries in the 1930’s.
