Graying of hair is a natural process that takes place as we grow old. The color of our hair is due to the pigments present in the hair strands.

As we age the pigments begin to fade slowly and the hair color transitions from dark gray to light gray to a silvery white.

Lack of vitamins can cause premature graying of hair. Intake of these vitamins can help to prevent and slow down graying of hair.

We can get these vitamins the natural way through foods that we eat or through vitamin supplements.

How does hair get its color?

The hair consists of two parts, the root below the scalp and shaft above the scalp.

The root of the hair is enclosed in a cup-like structure called the follicle. The root grows out of the scalp into long thin hair strands. These strands are also known as shafts.

The hair follicle has cells called melanocytes that produce melanin; this pigment melanin is responsible for hair color.

As the hair grows out of the scalp, the melanocytes keep producing and injecting the melanin pigment into the hair cells thus giving color to the hair strands.

What happens as we grow old?

As we age the cells that produce the color pigment melanin die and the production of melanin decreases. Due to this hair starts to gray.

Other factors that can cause gray hair are the lack of vitamins, climate, pollutants, toxins, exposure to chemicals and genetic defects.

Vitamins That Help To Prevent The Graying of Hair

The following vitamins help to slow down and prevent graying of hair -

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 also known as pyridoxine prevents premature graying of hair and gives the hair a beautiful shine. It helps to boost the production of melanin.

Vitamin B6 is found in abundance in animal meats, beef, chicken, and tuna. Fruits such as bananas, pineapples, prunes, and avocados are rich in vitamin B6.

Vitamin B7

Vitamin B7 is also known as Biotin. Biotin prevents premature graying of hair by producing a protein called keratin. The protein keratin helps to prevent graying and thinning of hair. Foods such as whole grains, brown rice, peanuts, walnuts, milk, cheese, and yogurt are rich in vitamin B7.

Vegetables such as sweet potatoes, carrots, cauliflowers and fruits such as bananas, raspberries and avocados are rich in vitamin B7.

Vitamin B5

Vitamin B5 also known as pantothenic acid helps to prevent gray hair by boosting the production of melanin. Foods such as meats, egg yolks, brewer’s yeast and whole grain cereals are rich in vitamin B5.

Vitamin B9

Vitamin B9 also known as folic acid helps to prevent premature graying of hair by increasing the production of melanocytes that produce the hair color pigment melanin.

Foods such as beans, legumes, spinach, broccoli, fortified cereals and bread are rich in folic acid.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E helps to improve the blood circulation to the scalp and keeps the scalp healthy. When this happens, the melanocytes get the required nutrition and can keep producing melanin that prevents graying of hair.

Foods such as soybean, spinach, broccoli, avocados, sunflower seeds, and almonds are rich in vitamin E.

Tips to Prevent Graying of Hair

Stress is one of the leading causes of graying of hair. Eliminate the stress factor as a much as you can.

Wear a cap while swimming to prevent chlorine damaging your hair. Chlorine has a bleaching effect on hair strands and can cause premature graying.

Use a shampoo and conditioner that suits your hair.

Use a wide toothed comb for wet hair.

Stop smoking. Smoking causes premature aging and can make your hair turn gray.

Drink water and keep yourself hydrated. If your body is dehydrated, the nutrients will not be able to reach the hair follicles.

Exercise regularly. Exercising will help to increase blood circulation to the scalp and hair follicles.

Make sure to include vitamins that help to prevent and slow down graying of hair in your diet.

      Also, I've heard of blackstrap moleasses helping with graying of hair, but I don't know if it's an "urban legend."

      I do take B & E and multiples. I had an aunt who fell and was paralyzed and apparently since she could not feed herself she was given all these good things to keep her healthy and I would never have believed it if I hadn't seen it but not only did her short grey hair grow to the floor but it turned solid black which was her natural color! So it is also reversible.
