Water Binges: Bathing your body from the inside out
We have all had it suggested, even advised that drinking a lot of water is good for you. However I don’t think the people who have been doing it for years or the doctors who recommend it know how challenging a fete this is for a newbie.
I remember when I first started this practice, it was a major challenge. Before my body could deal with the new hydrated me, my kidneys threw a major fit in protest of the new rules, and suddenly…..restrooms were my new friend.
But whether it was the “start with two to three extra glasses every few hours” or the “make sure it’s at least eight to twelve glasses a day” I don’t think they have an idea how weird it looks dancing to no music but on second thought thank God for ipods.
Weird dances or not, I can’t begin to emphasize on how important drinking water is to your overall health as well as your life. Regardless of whether too little or too much is toxic, we first need to understand that water is the main component of our blood and cells without which we wouldn’t be able to function properly.
While many of us may decry giving up the daily can of our choice soft drink or maybe those gallons of coffee or juice we so often religiously pour down our throats; what if you looked at drinking as giving your insides a bath then ask yourself this question, “what kind of bath are you giving your blood and cells?” Are you showering it in “dirty” stuff and suffocating them? Are you drowning them? Or are you giving your cells the same kind of relief you get when you pop in the bathroom for a cold shower on a hot summer afternoon.
Whether our choice drink is nutritious or not, we have to understand that, for these same nutrients to be beneficial to us, they need a medium that promotes the ability of the body to absorb them. One is then left to wonder just how much enough is. This is because too much water depending on when it’s taken may mean a dilution of the digestive juices which in turn results in food not being digested properly, meaning no nutrient uptake by your body causing health issues.
Ideally the kidneys are there to remove toxic waste from our body by filtering out the blood. This means that drinking very little water is a recipe for disaster as body tries to retain as much water as possible.
All of a sudden you are feeling light headed even on a full stomach, sluggish and you are headed for you third cup of coffee since you came back from lunch because the afternoon seem to be dragging along; and with urine too dark, suddenly you are thinking something is wrong with your kidneys…and your health; worse still, you have a rare blood group so getting a donor if worse comes to worst is zilch…and it “Nearer my God to thee” echoing in your brain.
On the flip side, a little too much water above what the body needs means the kidneys filter out most of the water and passes it out as urine. While almost clear urine may be a happy thought for many, let’s remember that some nutrients such as vitamins B and C are water soluble as well as important mineral such as potassium which are essential for regulating the blood pressure.
This means that they are being flushed out en masse and before you know it, those bleeding gums are a giving you nightmares and you are left wondering why your orange binge didn’t pay off.
However in some cases too much water doesn’t necessarily result in loss of nutrient the flip side of it is the body becomes over hydrated. As the hydration becomes severe, instead of excretion, the blood vessels become sponges soaking up water faster than they can excrete it.
The water then moves from the blood vessels and into the spaces between cells and at first, people are wondering if you did Botox to reduce those wrinkles only this is short lived because a little later puffy is your nickname.
While sometimes water retention may be a symptom to an underlying problem hence the need to see a doctor, sometimes foods high in sodium cause fluid to be retained. So that extra pinch of salt to your food before you even taste it, that bag of salty chips you have a weakness for, is worth a second thought.
Regardless of over hydration or dehydration, while there are medical means to manage the effects of both, however you can opt for a glass of water when you are thirsty instead of that soft drink or coffee or if you don’t feel like water how about a melon.
For those who overdo it, let your muscles do the job for you and break a sweat with a brisk walk or a jog in the park might do the trick.
