How to Hydrate the Brain Adequately
Have you noticed how you feel refreshed and alert when you have a drink of water after having worked for a few hours? This is only the most immediate positive effect. It is amazing what a simple thing like water which we take so much for granted can do for maintaining a healthy body and brain.
All that we eat and drink is processed and it reaches all the vital systems through our blood and 82% of blood consists of water. The benefits of drinking adequate amounts of water regularly are many and we must pay attention to the body signals when we feel thirsty or tired.
What is Water?
At school we learned that Water is a chemical substance with each molecule containing one oxygen and two hydrogen atoms. It is usually found in its liquid state but is also found in its solid state as ice, and in a gaseous state as water vapour or steam.
Percentage of Water
of the Earth's surface
of the planet's water is found in oceans
in glaciers and the ice caps of Antarctica and Greenland
in the air as vapor, clouds and precipitation.
of the Earth's water is freshwater
of that water is in ice and groundwater.
Less than 0.3%
of all freshwater is in rivers, lakes, and the atmosphere
of Earth's freshwater is contained within biological bodies and man-made products.
Water is the most precious life giving substance that sustains all life on this planet. Water is found in the varying percentages on planet Earth (see the table on the right). It is interesting to note that a very small percentage is suitable for drinking, only 2.5%, or is accessible for humans and animals.
A major portion of the planet is covered by water in the oceans. Due to global warming the ice caps are melting and reducing the salinity of the waters in the oceans causing great harm to marine life. According to research conducted by scientists a change in the availability of freshwater due to climate change poses a greater risk to humans and ecosystems than global warming alone. The website of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has an article on the effects of atmospheric warming and how it alters the salinity of the oceans.
Water in the Human Body
Just as the Earth is composed of mainly water so is the human body. Drinking adequate amounts of water not only helps cure many diseases but also prevents and reduces the risk of many common illnesses as well.
- 60% of the human body is water
- 70% water – BRAIN
- 82% water – BLOOD
- 90% -- LUNGS are nearly water.
Are You Drinking Enough Water to Stay Healthy?
How Much Water Do We Need to Be Hydrated?
We all have heard that the body requires at least eight glasses of water per day. Another way to measure the adequate amount of water that is needed each day is to divide the body weight in half. That is the amount of water in ounces you should drink daily. For example:
Your weight = 100 pounds
Water needed = 50 ounces (about 8-10 cups of water a day)
Why is Water Good for the Body and Brain?
As seen above 70% of the Brain consists of Water and it is important to keep the body hydrated. The rest of the body is dependent on the brain to function. The brain, thus, requires adequate amounts of water to keep it running in good condition. To help this happen, the body makes sure the brain has enough by moving water from other parts to the brain. This happens when we don't hydrate the body adequately.
Our brain works all the time, even when we are asleep, hence it needs water more than any other organ in the body. Hence it is important to keep the body hydrated at all times if one has to function well in day to day life. The cause of many diseases is the lack of water to function properly which in turn builds up the toxins in the body tissues and organs.
You will notice that working long hours without water, whether it is on the computer or just being busy with various chores can make you feel tired and irritable. However, if you remember to drink a few sips periodically you don't tire easily. Your brain remains alert and you are able to get a lot of work done.
What are the Signs of Dehydration?
Thirst is a sure sign that the body is dehydrated. A dry mouth is the last outward sign of being dehydrated. Checking the colour of the urine can tell us whether the body is hydrated or not:
- Colorless Urine is a good sign of being well hydrated.
- Yellow Urine shows a slight dehydration.
- Orange or Dark-colored Urine is a sign of extreme dehydration.
Do's and Don'ts of Drinking Water
Though we are all humans we are all not the same in body and its needs. We have to recognize our own particular indicators of thirst.
- It is important to learn to rehydrate your body gradually and carefully.
- Watch the signals of what can happen to your body when it becomes dehydrated.
- Not all liquids hydrate the body.
- Coffee, tea, beer, soda, juice etc. are actually contain diuretics that remove water from the body.
- Drink only water when re-hydrating. Drink more water when you consume other drinks like coffee, alcohol, juices, etc.
- Too much water all at once can actually dehydrate the body.
Helps in Eliminating Toxins from the Body
The most important function of water other than hydrating the body and helping with general being is its ability to remove toxins from the body. If toxins and waste materials were not removed from the body it would die in a very short time. It is the ability of water to dissolve so many substances that allows the blood to transport all the essential material all over the body. The same blood helps in removing waste material from the body tissues and take it to elimination systems in the body.
The importance of drinking adequate amounts of water throughout the day cannot be underestimated. By being mindful and taking care to keep the body hydrated we will reduce unnecessary suffering in our lives. By being healthy we can save a lot of money on health costs not only for ourselves but for all humanity.
Eco-Friendly Water Bottles and Accessories
Keeping the brain hydrated adequately requires the right storage methods to keep the water clean and pure. You can avoid harmful chemicals in plastics by buying products made of other materials and that are also gentle on the environment.
Carrying your own water bottle will help you measure how much you drink per day and also the purity of the water. Try using your own water bottle and storing water at home in glass jars.
