Depression

Depression can be such a terrible thing to have to deal with. Whether it's you or a loved one, or a friend, you will more than likely need help from a professional. If you deal with depression each day or even if it's just during a certain time of year, month or even a certain time during the day it still makes simple everyday tasks very hard to complete. Everything just seems impossible. There could be an unexpected event, or a life changing experience that might trigger the particular period of depression. There might be such an event like the death of someone who was close to you. If you lose someone who is close to you that you see every day, this can disrupt your everyday routine. It can also leave a very large void in your life and might be the very reason that causes the depression. There are resources out there to help you such as support groups, someone in your church (such as a pastor), your family physician. You might even need to talk to a professional like a counselor. There is no shame in this. Society would like for you to believe that you are weak if you need to talk to someone. I beg to differ. This is a great way to get the help that you need.

Each person handles depression differently, just like they do pain. What works well for one person if they are depressed, may not work at all for someone else. You have to find the method that what works the best for you.

I do encourage you to get help from a professional if you are feeling like you might want to hurt yourself. When you are down and I mean truly down, it is hard to get yourself out of your funk for yourself.

Going for a walk, and taking deep breaths, reading a book, calling a friend, are just a few of the ways that you can get depression off of your mind. If there is something that you enjoy doing such as a craft or maybe there's a certain website that you enjoy visiting. All of these things are very productive and can just be good for your overall well being. The most important thing, that I can think of is for you to call a friend and talk to them.

It is very hard to help or reach someone who is truly to the point of depression, that they feel helpless. Just letting them know that you are there for them will mean so much to them.

Dealing With Depression and Anxiety

Pick-me-ups

Some of the things that I have read over the years say that a good balanced diet, is a great way to start. Taking care of your self, as far as exercise, is another way to get the blood pumping. This is to release endorphins that help increase your mood or feelings.

Friends and family can be a big help as well. Be sure that you have a strong support system through your family. They can be of huge help to you and know what is best for you.

If the help that you need is beyond what your family can give you, then they may take you to get professional help. They will know what to do for you and how to help you.

Being religious or belonging to a church can be a great boost for your self esteem and church family can be just what you need to get through the rough patch that you might be going through.

Self Therapy

One of the things that I had to realize and to be taught, is that it is ok to sit and just be. We are so busy in our daily activities that we feel like we always need to be up and doing things to stay busy. Sometimes we just need time for ourselves especially if you are always doing things for others. Don't forget to do something nice for yourself at least 2-3 times per week.

Some people that you will talk to, will advise you to do something nice for yourself each and every day but, some times you may not have enough money to do something that costs money each day for yourself so, you may have to become creative and come up with some things that you can do for free or almost free.

You may have a favorite food that you could reward yourself with or you might enjoy just changing your sheets and doing something nice for yourself in that way. Make some coffee if you enjoy coffee. Buy yourself some different coffee creamer to try as a treat.

Simple Ways To Manage Depression

Listen to Others

If you have ever been through depression first hand or been through it with someone, you know how devastating it can truly be. The smallest of problems, just seem overwhelming and there are some days that we call handle things better. If you know of someone that seems to be down their luck, if you can help them, or just offer a word of encouragement, this can go a long way.

You never know what you might say that could encourage you and make you feel better.

Depression Hurts

I will never forget one of the drug companies put in their advertisement, that "depression hurts,". It keeps you away from activities that you love to do, it keeps you away from the ones that you love and can make you feel like no one wants or needs you. This is not a good position to be in when you are already in a frame of mind to feel sorry for yourself.

You chose very interesting and very timely topic. Depression touches so many of us, and hurts entire families.

Really well-written article. I appreciate the brain picture demonstrating the effects of depression. I don't think I can classify myself as "Depressed"- I may be in denial or simply may not know- but I like the idea of self-therapy when I get down. A little meditation, anyone?
