A queasy stomach is also known as an upset stomach, indigestion or dyspepsia. There are many ways people can ease a queasy stomach. Not all remedies work for all people or for all stomach aches. It is important to figure out why your stomach may be upset before deciding how best to settle your tummy. Some remedies may upset your stomach even more if you do not select the appropriate remedy for the cause of your upset stomach.

It is important to see your medical professional first to ensure your upset stomach is not a symptom of a more serious condition. Some common methods of easing queasy stomachs may be contraindicated for some medical conditions and medications. It is important to review any changes in regimen and symptoms with a medical professional.

Preventing a Queasy Stomach

If you have a chronic queasy stomach or the remedies listed below do not work for you or aggravate your symptoms, you may need to consult a doctor. It is possible the underlying cause of your upset stomach is a condition that needs to be treated by a medical professional.

Many foods can irritate your stomach. Here is a list of items that may irritate you. It is best to keep a diet journal and note any symptoms you may have to determine what may bother you:

  • cauliflower
  • cabbage

  • discuss your medication with a doctor- some prescription drugs can irritate the stomach


Remedies for an upset stomach

You decided to eat poorly, you ate food that does not agree with you, you ate quickly, you are under a lot of stress and ate comfort food. Whatever the reason may be, you now have an upset stomach. So what do you do now? Below is a list of some remedies for upset stomach that may ease your discomfort and settle your stomach.


Antacids are a quick way to relieve heartburn and are available at drug stores and most supermarkets over the counter. Doctors recommend them for infrequent heartburn; however, when antacids are used frequently overtime, your body builds a tolerance and may begin to overproduce stomach acid. Stomach acid has a purpose- it digests our food. If we continually block stomach acid, we are not able to digest our foods and absorb all the nutrients.


NOTE: Apples may also cause upset stomach in some people. Apples can introduce fiber back into your diet if you eat a raw apple with the peel. It is important to add fiber slowly to your diet. A blast of fiber after having a diet low in fiber will aggravate your symptoms quite a bit.

Baking Soda

What is baking soda not used for? Baking soda acts as an antacid. This remedy is also a quick fix and should not be used on a regular basis.

People have reported using half a teaspoon of baking soda in about 4 oz of water to ease heartburn symptoms.


Just like apple, banana irritates the stomach in some. Many though find eating bananas eases their stomach. Bananas are easy to digest. Banana extract can be found in pill form since it is known to ease an upset stomach.


Caraway Seeds

Caraway seeds may help with digestion and gas. You could chew on these seeds, make a tea, or eat something mild with them. This is usually located in the spices and seasoning section of the supermarket.


Cinnamon can stimulate the digestion system. This may help move things along. It is possible to eat cinnamon straight (I am sure some will try it!). You could consume cinnamon within a tea or sprinkle it heavily on mild food such as toast.

Sometimes simply eating crackers can settle an upset stomach. When there is too much stomach acid in the stomach, crackers such as soda crackers or saltines can absorb liquid and make stomach acid less likely to enter the esophagus and cause heartburn.


Fennel Seeds

Fennel seeds may ease stomach cramps and gas. You could chew on these seeds, make a tea, or eat something mild with them. This is usually located in the spices and seasoning section of the supermarket.



Ginger helps food move smoothly through the digestive system and is commonly used for nausea and gas. Ginger root is available in the produce section. It has a strong spicy taste. Some can actually boil ginger and drink it as a tea but most people could not tolerate the bite. Ginger can be drank as a tea or eaten with food.

Ginger ale

Carbonated beverages may cause an upset stomach but if your stomach ache is due to overeating and you need to belch, carbonated beverages may help you.

Many people choose ginger ale believing it contains ginger. Most ginger ales don't unless you find an organic or ethnic brand that contains ginger.


Mint may help food travel smoothly through the digestive system and ease cramping. You can chew on mint leaves or add mint to tea. This is usually found in the produce section of the supermarket either as a plant or fresh herbs.


Thyme may stimulate the digestive tract as well as relieve cramping and gas. Thyme is often added to tea along with other remedies or eaten with food. This is usually located in the spices and seasoning section of the supermarket.



Papaya can relieve heartburn. Papaya contains papain which is a digestive enzyme that can sooth the stomach and aid in digestion. Health food stores often sell papaya extract for this reason. Fresh papaya can be found in the produce section with other fruits. Papaya extract tends to be available at over the counter drug isles.


Many people report taking vinegar relieves heartburn. Vinegar may help in closing the esophagus and preventing acid reflux.

To take vinegar, you could mix 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with a full glass of water. If it is intolerable for you, you could add a teaspoon of maple syrup or honey.
