Week 5 - The Flu Diet

Updated on February 8, 2013
The Flu Diet - Week 5 of 52 diets in 52 weeks.
The Flu Diet - Week 5 of 52 diets in 52 weeks.

January 29- February 4

As some of you may have read last week, this week's diet was supposed to be The Perfect Health Diet. However, the Flu virus had other plans for me. I picked up the lovely virus Influenza B on Monday and I have been sick ever since.

Sorry I haven't updated this week. It's just so hard when you are feeling as miserable as I have been feeling this week to get up the energy to do anything productive. So I have not done ANYTHING productive this week; just ask my husband. I did however do a lot of whining and moaning about how sick I was. I did a LOT of coughing and some other unfortunate and unpleasant things that I won't bother you with here.

When it comes to being sick. I'm a baby. I had the opportunity to evaluate the idea that my body is a calorie burning engine when it's sick because I spent several days with a fever over 101 and as high as 103. So I will count that as exercise. I also did so much coughing that the muscles over my rib cage were actually sore. Like just did 500 sit-ups sore. So there was another exercise.

I have eaten very little, but what I did eat was not always so healthy. I ate half a roll of crackers on Monday. On Tuesday I ate 1.5 grilled cheese sandwiches (mistake) and half a bowl of tomato soup. On Wednesday I don't recall eating anything at all. I do recall feeling very hungry. I think I did search for things to eat in the house that didn't make me queasy, but I can't remember actually eating anything. I drank almost 100 oz of Gatorade. ON Friday my kids were out of school and my 12 year old ran to the gas station a block away from our house. I drank another 64 ounces of Gatorade, ate one nasty tasting piece of convenience store pizza and 5 of those little powdered doughnuts. She also bought me some of those little Ritz Bitz cheese crackers, but my 6 year old ate all of those, and my stomach thanked her for doing it when the nasty pizza was making it's reappearance.

Today, Saturday, I had to coach a volleyball tournament at 9am. I felt almost 85% back to normal and my team took first in their tournament! I think they might have felt sorry for me. Maybe I should have the flu more often!

Anyway, for lunch I had Ham sandwich and about 4 Doritos that I had packed for lunch. Afterwords (about 5 PM) my team went out for ice cream and I had a vanilla malt and three of my daughter's french fries. At 9 I had 2 pieces of frozen pizza my husband made for supper.

Sooo... that's my week so far. I know I still have 2 more days to go. And I HOPE that they will be healthier than the last week. When you are sick you just have to eat what's available to you and what doesn't make you sick thinking about it.

On Sunday I have a two hour volleyball practice, and then it's the Super Bowl, so I don't know how great things will go then either. Haha! But I promise, I'll be right back to the diet next week. At any rate, I'm still calling this week a diet week and I'm dubbing it "The Flu Diet" because between the very few calories I consumed, and all the calories I should have burned with my fever and coughing, I SHOULD lose weight. But, I guess we will see when I weigh in at the end of the week.

Start and End Weight

Week 5 - Start Weight: 188

Week 5 - End Weight: 187

2/8/13

I'm still going! I will get this current weeks diet up as soon as I am able. I have an incredibly busy couple of weeks ahead of me, so please bear with me. I will update as soon as I am able. I did lose weight with the flu. Just one lb, I thought it would maybe be more.

So much to report, and so little time. Being down with the flu for an entire week (yep it wound up being from Monday-Sunday for me) has really put me behind. Sometimes I feel like I can't keep up! Thanks for sticking with me!

      Diane How's it going?

Dianne, 4 pounds in only a few days is quite an accomplishment! Good luck with losing more. I am trying to lose some weight, I just need a diet that would work for me.

Dianne, That actually sounds like a good idea. It could help you get to your goal weight faster and hopefully just staying on 8 hour diet afterward to maintain. But I don't think I am ready for that yet. Congratulations on your weight loss.

I am on the 8 hr iet, and find it very easy. Started on Monday, and on Thursday, I was down 4 lbs. The difference in my strategy is that I am adding in another diet on two days of my week. I am trying the Fast Diet, 2 of the days of the week. Same rules as the 8 hr diet except you can only have 500 cal for women , 600 calories for men.. I am an over achiever, and did it three times in the past five days, and my husband has done it twice. It is very easy as well, and you really don't have terrible hunger pains. You are actually less hungry the next day. This diet also claims to have health benefits as well. We will see how long the two of us last!

Fair enough Kathryn I'm not going to disagree with you as I don't know the ins and outs of how it all works so I can't say. I remember when I had a blog though I was offered Adsense straight away not that I did it because I decided not to continue with the blog so that's why I don't know much about it so ill agree with you. She could give everyone a short update though and just say whether she is continuing or not so people can stop wasting their time coming back here if she is not continuing

@Aussiemumof2girls, that is not how it works. The pay for the ads is minimal, and she probably doesn't get paid for them yet (you have to have at least 10 good hubs before you get approved for any of the HubPage ads or affiliate programs). And in that case, it's better to create more and more hubs than to have a few people popping in on only a few. I would imagine she has just gotten very busy. Life gets in the way of writing sometimes.

I think because of the ads on the page she gets paid for them so that why she is not saying she has quit so people can keep coming back and she gets paid more

I hope she keeps going because I have some other diets to try. Atkins and South Beach, of course. The Fat Fallacy one is great. And then there's the classic Weight Watchers.

Three of us in family did the 8 hour diet . Stuck with it 3-4 weeks. A total bust. We did not cheat and watched our calories. Did not count them, but ate healthy. lost 3 pounds the first few daubs but gained back. Lost 2 pound in three weeks. :-(

Hope you are feeling better. Overcoming illness can surely take time to get back on track. Take as much time as you need, and come back refreshed. Most of us will gain some weight back as we endeavor to lose. That is not failure, that's just life. Taking a break is unavoidable from time to time, just don't give up. A verse that encourages me is "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

I can't believe people are taking the time to bash her. She is a busy mom and wife. Putting yourself first is something a lot of mothers struggle with. Probably why she woke up unhappy with herself and determined to make a change. I know I did. I have found this blog inspiring and although I am not doing a different diet every week I am doing my best to try to keep myself at the top of the priority list. But like all things in life there are times a schedule doesn't always make it feasible and she is just having one of those weeks. Being rude to her because that has happened doesn't do anyone any good.

@ Waiting, that is not nice. In her last update only a few days ago, she had lost 1 lb, and she's not on here because she is BUSY. But if she does gains some back, it's no huge deal. It happens.

If you look up at the end of her article, you will see she updated her post on 2/08/13, and said she is still going, but has a busy few weeks ahead.

Weeklydietplan, I will stick around, and good luck!

Oh, please don't give up on this! It'll be okay if you don't actually end up doing 52 diets, it's the still the idea, and good gracious I have so much respect for you! Give yourself another week if you need it, but please come back to this! Think of the weight you've already lost! You are our inspiration, my dear.

That post sounds like you have given up. At least tell us what diet you are on.

How are some of the 8 hour dieters doing?

    • Kathryn Stratford profile image

@ Fat, Maybe she's just busy this week. I think it would be hard to keep up a diet and a blog every week. Either way, I think she'll be back.

It's really too bad you came down with the flu, but I like that you are using that as your week #5 diet. That is a unique spin on getting sick.

I am glad you feel much better, but I hope the flu goes away. It is awful not feeling good enough to eat much. The Gatorade is a good way to stay hydrated, though. We keep the low-calorie version in our house. But when you are sick, calories can be good.

Good luck with the weight loss, but if you didn't lose any weight, don't worry about it. You'll get back on track once things get back to normal.

glad to hear your feeling better....this is the first I came across this blog. January 2nd watching the morning news and all the hubbababa about new years resolutions for dieting I learned about the 8 Hour diet. I downloaded the book and have tried several combinations of 8 hour since January 2. I have really enjoyed reading your 52 diets for a year blog. It has encouraged me to go back and reread the 8 Hour Diet book and follow it a little better.
