Just about everybody wants to lose weight and/or keep it at a particular level, don’t they? Well, if you don’t want to take store-bought chemicals to suppress your appetite, try natural substances. Natural substances are certainly safer to consume and probably a lot cheaper too.

Natural appetite suppressants are supplements or foods known as anorectics, which boost metabolism and/or make a person feel satiated. If you fill your diet with such substances, you may avoid obesity and the various complications thereof. Interestingly, water is a good example of a natural appetite suppressant. Simply drinking more H2O every day can help suppress your appetite.

1. Coffee

Coffee consumption has taken place for many centuries, and coffee beans were first cultivated in southern Arabia sometime in the fourteenth century. Many people love the taste of coffee, of course, and they may also love caffeine, the stimulant coffee contains. Drinking a cup of caffeinated coffee can suppress one’s appetite, since caffeine can lessen a person’s urge to eat. In fact, consuming coffee can have many health benefits, including reducing the incidence of some forms of cancer. But caffeine ingestion has side effects, including nervousness and headaches. So, drink up, but don’t overdo it!

By the way, another similar beverage in this regard is green tea. And, because green tea contains about half the caffeine as coffee, you may be able to consume as much as of it as you please.

2. Salmon

As contradictory as it may seem, salmon is a good appetite suppressant because it contains lots of fat and protein. The fat salmon contains is considered good fat, that is, high in omega-3 fatty acids, which are supposed to promote heart health, and the protein it holds is considered a high level of which. Therefore, consuming just a little salmon can make a person feel full and satisfied.

Some caution may be advised when consuming salmon, however, because farmed salmon may contain high levels of pollutants such as dioxins and PCB. Nevertheless, these levels are very low and generally considered of little risk to humans. So, chow down on salmon - assuming you're allowed to eat it!

3. Flax Seeds

Flax seeds have been eaten by people for thousands of years, beginning in the various civilizations of the Fertile Crescent and perhaps millennia before that time (no one knows for sure how long ago). Flax seeds contain a high level of dietary fiber, which make them good appetite suppressants. Consuming them may also help stabilize the sugar level in your blood. They also contain a high amount of omega-3 fatty acids. Simply put, eating flax seeds can fill you up quickly and provide an excellent nutritional payoff.

4. Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a spice that’s been used by humans since the days of the Old Testament, at least; the ancient Greeks called it Kassia. Anyway, many people who struggle with obesity suffer from a blood sugar imbalance that make them crave sugar and refined carbohydrates. (Some consider sugar to be as addictive as cocaine.) Fortunately, consuming cinnamon can stimulate insulin receptors on fat cells, allowing sugar to leave the blood and enter cells, thereby reducing cravings. In fact, cinnamon seems to improve insulin function, a definite advantage for people suffering from Diabetes mellitus type 2.

5. Caralluma Fimbriata

Caralluma Fimbriata is a succulent shrub that grows wild in India and many other countries. For many years it has been taken to counteract hunger, suppress appetite and increase energy; it is also used to quench thirst. Because of these properties, Caralluma Fimbriata has been called famine food. Diet pills containing an extract from the plant have been marketed on the Internet and some claim it provides a “miracle diet.” Moreover, the side effects of taking Caralluma Fimbriata appear minimal, and it costs about $50 for a one-month supply of pills.

6. Psyllium

Psyllium is a plant-derived fiber that readily absorbs water, thereby increasing in volume tenfold. Because of this property, it is considered a very effective dietary fiber and thus works well as a laxative and stool softener. Not surprisingly, Psyllium is the primary ingredient in Metamucil. Therefore, Psyllium can quickly fill up a person who consumes even a small amount of it with water, preferably before dinner when one wants to suppress one’s appetite. Interestingly, Psyllium is often used to thicken foods such as ice cream and frozen desserts.

7. Ginger

In folk medicine, ginger is considered a stimulant and carminative, as well as a cure-all for a multitude of maladies both serious and otherwise. Many books have been written about how healthful ginger seems to be. In fact, the American Cancer Society thinks it may keep cancerous tumors from developing. At any rate, ginger usage definitely seems effective when treating fatigue, nausea or obesity. By the way, ginger can be consumed in various ways, including ginger tea, which may be the best way to take it as an appetite suppressant.

8. Black Soybeans

Black soybeans are a variety of soy beans that contain more phytonutrients and antioxidants than other soy beans, particularly the more common yellow ones. As is the case with all soybeans, black soybeans contain a great amount of protein; about 60 percent of the bean is protein. They also contain a great deal of dietary fiber. Therefore, consuming a small bowl of black soybeans before a meal will decrease one’s appetite significantly and do so in a way that is highly nutritious. Incidentally, black soybeans are another health food highly touted by the venerable Dr. Oz.

9. Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne pepper, also known as Guinea spice, is another common appetite suppressant, and one that also helps rev-up your metabolism. Considered about medium on the hot scale, cayenne pepper is filled with vitamins and consuming it has many possible health applications, including the lowering of one’s bad (LDL) cholesterol. In fact, cayenne pepper is included in the famous master diet cleanse program. Surprisingly, cayenne pepper has the supposed ability to stop a heart attack!

10. Wasabi Root

Have you ever wondered why Japanese people often appear slender and healthy? Maybe it’s all the wasabi they consume. Wasabi, a.k.a. Japanese horseradish, is a condiment with an extremely strong flavor and also a hotness that is something akin to hot mustard. Anyway, what makes wasabi a good appetite suppressant is that it’s high in protein. Unfortunately, since wasabi is difficult to grow, it can be rather expensive; therefore, substitutes are often served at sushi bars, where wasabi is often provided as a condiment.

      Well, I'd never heard of Wasabi root, so that's something to look into in any case.

      Avoiding 'slimming products' is probably a really good idea as I believe there are many risks associated with them - and, indeed, many just don't work! These natural alternatives are a good idea.

      I think it's always worth pointing out to anyone who wants to lose weight or slim down that the only way is by a combination of regular exercise and a balanced diet.

      Enjoyed reading this today. I'd like to add a little trick I do to help suppress my appetite. I use a tablespoon of vinegar in a half of glass of water. For me, it works best between meals to help prevent me from having the munches. Voted up.
