Diabetics often focus on more so on what the et than what they drink. However, they should know what they can drink and what they should not drink. Some beverages can cause a spike in a blood sugar level as well as on a person's weight.
Water Should Be a Diabetic's Drink of Choice
Water should be the beverage of choice for every diabetic. It's important to stay hydrated, and water is simply the best choice. Water is the perfect drink because it doesn't have calories, sugar, or carbohydrates.
Most experts recommend that everyone should drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water every single day. This is especially important for diabetics. That's because water flushes sugar from the bloodstream.
Options Other Than Plain Water
For people who are tired of drinking plain water, there are many other options. Many diabetics find that sparkling water is a great choice.
There is no excuse for not drinking water because there are many drinks in the grocery store with zero calories. Some people have learned to make their own infused water. It is easy and very convenient to do. Simply add slices of cucumbers, strawberries, raspberries, fresh mint or other ingredients for a refreshing low-calorie drink.
You can also turn plain water into a nice treat by using water enhancers such as Stur, MiO or other liquids that come in different flavors. Squirt as much as you like into a bottle or glass of water until you get the strength that you like.
Diet Sodas and Low-Calorie Drinks
Soda is not a beverage of choice for most people because of the sugar and carbohydrates. Many diet drinks have zero grams of carbohydrate and no sugar. Therefore, they will not raise blood glucose levels.
Sugars have been removed from diet drinks and replaced with low-calorie sweeteners. This method takes out most of the calories and carbohydrates.
If diabetics have a taste for a soda, the diet ones are much better than the regular ones. Low-calorie drinks and drink mixes are available in several flavors. They have about 5-10 calories and less than 5 grams of carbohydrate in a single eight-ounce serving.
Plain coffee contains very few calories and carbohydrates. That means it can be part of a healthy diet. It is not the coffee that is unhealthy. Calories and carbohydrates come from the things added to coffee such as sugar, sweetener, cream, non-dairy creamer, flavors, and syrups.
It is best to add only a small amount or nothing at all in order to have the least impact on blood sugar.
Most people don't know that consuming coffee may prevent Type 2 diabetes. However, it does not cure the disease if you start drinking it after you have been diagnosed with the disease. Even so, diabetics can enjoy coffee without getting a spike in their blood sugar level if they do not add calories and carbohydrates to it.
Tea, like coffee, contains very few calories and carbohydrates. It is not the tea that causes a rise in blood sugar. Like coffee, the beverage becomes unhealthy when things are added to flavor it. Try to drink unsweetened teas that can be consumed hot or cold.
It should be good news for diabetics that there are many teas on the market that taste good enough without adding any sweeteners. Consumers can choose from black, green, or herbal teas.
Diabetics don't have to give up consuming milk. Of course, they can drink it in coffee or with cereal. It is suggested that those with the disease should drink low-fat 1% or fat-free milk. Those choices contain only 80 calories, 12 grams of carbohydrates, calcium, and vitamin D.
For diabetics who are lactose intolerant or don’t like milk at all, almond milk, fortified soy milk, and rice milk are options.
Diabetics should be careful when choosing which juice to consume. That's because most juices contain a lot of carbohydrates. Sometimes it is better to eat an orange than to drink its juice if it contains sugar.
Four ounces or less of juice contains at least 15 grams of carbohydrates and 50 or more calories. Choose a beverage that is 100% juice without any added sugar.
Apple cider has the same number of carbohydrates as apple juice. One cup has 26 grams of carbs. It is better to choose a light apple juice cocktail. By doing so, calories and carbohydrates could be cut in half.
Drinks to Avoid
The above drinks are healthy enough for diabetics. However, certain drinks should be avoided because they will definitely cause a spike in blood sugar levels.
Avoid regular sodas because one 12-ounce has about 150 calories and 40 grams of carbohydrates. This is the same amount of carbohydrates in 10 teaspoons of sugar.
Avoid fruit drinks, fruit punch, energy drinks, sports drinks, sugary drinks, and sweet tea. Just one cup of these has 100 or more calories and 30 grams of carbohydrates. They are sure to raise blood glucose.
