What Every Person Needs to Know About Modern Medicine
The purpose of modern medicine depends on the society that it is in. If it is a socialist society, the purpose of modern medicine is to heal the sick and keep people healthy. In a capitalistic society, the purpose of modern medicine is to make money. Especially in America, the purpose is to make as much money as possible.
If doctors and teachers made the same amount of money, things would be very different. Then the people becoming doctors would be more interested in helping people than making money. Just in case here are the Merriam-Webster definitions of socialism and capitalism.
Socialism-- a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done.
Capitalism-- an economic system characterized by private or corporate ownership of capital goods, by investments that are determined by private decision, and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are determined mainly by competition in a free market.
Please note that social security income, disability income and food stamps, to help people have food that cannot afford to buy it, are all examples of socialism not capitalism.
Being a medical doctor is a career and the purpose of a career is to make money. So what is good business and what is bad business in modern medicine. It is good business for modern medicine for someone to get sick and need to be treated for it for the rest of their life. That is how you keep a customer. If the customer or patient dies, that is bad for business since they lose that customer. if the patient is cured, then that is bad for business since they lose that customer.
It is estimated that 40% of the medications or drugs are for what. Can you guess what that is? List all the things that it could possibly be. You get 20 guesses. It is the side effects of other medications! Now that is great for business. Using the product creates a greater need for the product.
Also as far as profit margin, they can make drugs for pennies and charge a fortune for it. Here is an MSNBC article called 10 items With Ludicrous Markups. Coffee is on this list since it has a 300 percent (300%) markup. But the articles says that drugs (medications) have a 200 percent to 3,000 percent markup. 3,000% markup is 30 times the cost to make it. The article says:
Some estimates put the markup of brand name drugs at 600,000 percent when compared to the cost of active ingredients. [Note that is 6,000 times the cost of the ingredients.]
One of the most profitable drugs ever was Vioxx. It was to treat pain. Pain is not a disease but a symptom of a disease. They pulled it off the market since it was killing people. The same has happened with many medications. How profitable was that one drug? On the day it was pulled, ignoring the compay that makes it (Merck), the Dow Jones average would have gone up. But because of Merck, that day the Dow Jones average went down.
The New York Times article called Merck to Pay $950 Million Over Vioxx says:
Merck has agreed to pay $950 million and has pleaded guilty to a criminal charge over the marketing and sales of the painkiller Vioxx, the company and the Justice Department said Tuesday.
Merck agreed to pay a $321 million criminal fine and plead guilty to one misdemeanor count of illegally introducing a drug into interstate commerce, the Justice Department said in a news release.
I read that on the day that Vioxx was recalled, a mother in her 30s, with no serious health problems, who was taking Vioxx, died. But Vioxx did not make a mistake. Their fine was a little less than a billion dollars but they made BILLIONS OF DOLLARS on this drug that was prescribed by thousands of doctors. This demonstrates the power of capitalism.
Please note that Naturopathic Doctors do not prescribe drugs and it is not the best career for someone who wants to make a lot of money. Please note that in the above example, no one was forced to take Vioxx. It was their choice to take it.
This month, October, is breast cancer awareness month. A huge amount of money is spent on treating this and doing research on breast cancer. If breast cancer were cured tomorrow, many people would be out of a job. There is a book by a medical doctor all about this called A World Without Cancer. Most people that have cancer and die, die from chemotherapy.
In the late 1800s the most common treatment of medical doctors was bleeding or bloodletting. President George Washington had a very sore throat. When I donate blood, they will only allow me or anyone to give one pint of blood in a day. The doctors treated Washington by bleeding 3 pints of blood from him and he died.

Cancer | Livestrong | Lance Armstrong
Lance Armstrong had stated many times that he is completely against sports enhancing drugs. By using them and convincing people that he was not using them, he won 7 Tour de France titles in bicycle racing. He used this to start his cancer foundation called Livestrong that has raised $500 million to research cancer.
It was learned that he was the best liar of the last century and all 7 of his titles were taken away and he was banned from competing again. So all of his success came from lying. Someone on the internet said that the good that he did with raising all that money for cancer outweighs the bad that he did. But he did not accomplish anything.
In fact they are no longer trying to cure cancer but just treat it since that is what is profitable. Now is there anyone saying this besides me? Yes many doctors have come out and said that most people that have cancer and die, die from chemotherapy.
A World Without Cancer by Margeret Cuomo M.D.
There is a new book that was just published October 2, 2012. It is called A World Without Cancer. It is by a medical doctor Margeret I. Cuomo MD. Margaret I. Cuomo, MD, is a board-certified radiologist and served as an attending physician in diagnostic radiology at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset New York for many years. Specializing in body imaging, involving CT, Ultrasound, MRI and interventional procedures, much of her practice was dedicated to the diagnosis of cancer and AIDS.
She is the daughter of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo and Mrs. Matilda Cuomo. She is the sister to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, (before that he was attorney general of New York) and ABC's Chris Cuomo.
A Barnes and Noble Book Review says:
According to Dr. Margaret I. Cuomo, the evidence is clear: "The system designed to study, diagnose and treat cancer in the United States is broken, and it is in urgent need of reform." In A World without Cancer, she explains how our mission to prevent and cure cancer has been superseded by a money-driven rush to create expensive pharmaceutical treatments.
''A grippingly insightful game plan to eradicate cancer . . . We need to hear and heed Dr. Cuomo's advice.'' --Mehmet Oz, MD, New York Times bestselling author.
Arianna Huffington says:
''A World without Cancer is an eye-opening look at the way we fight cancer. Margaret Cuomo's call for bold leadership to transform our system from treatment to prevention is urgent, powerful, and sure to start a national conversation.''
The book says:
THE SYSTEM DESIGNED TO STUDY, DIAGNOSE, and treat cancer in the United States is fatally flawed.
For years, I have been observing the “cancer culture” in the United States, and I have become convinced that it is not structured to do what we most need: to determine how to prevent cancer, and then implement our discoveries. Despite decades of promises and a vast amount of funding, the current model of research has failed us. We no longer expect to cure cancer and now talk mostly about living longer with the disease.
Here is an an article by her called Why is Cancer Treatment Fatally Flawed. it says [about Good Morning America co-anchor Robin Roberts' recent announcement that she had been diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS)]:
What's more appalling, though, is the fact that her treatment for breast cancer, presumably involving chemotherapy and radiation, are both risk factors for MDS. In other words, the medical treatment she received to "beat" breast cancer may well be responsible for the life-threatening condition she now faces.
The evidence is clear: The system designed to study, diagnose and treat cancer in the United States is broken, and it is in urgent need of reform.
Unfortunately, there is a much greater emphasis, and a much more substantial financial investment, in cancer treatment than cancer prevention.
Government leaders, researchers, physicians, the pharmaceutical industry, cancer advocates, and many other stakeholders all have a key role in promoting a safer, healthier environment, better nutrition, increased physical activity, and a new emphasis on prevention in cancer research. Working together, we will make significant strides in creating a world without cancer.
Naturopathic Physicians | ND | NMD
There are other MDs that are trying to cure diseases instead of getting people to take drugs for the rest of their life. Naturopathic Physicians do not use drugs at all. So they are trying to help people get better instead of just making money.
A good example of this is naturopathic college student Erica Robinson. Unlike Lance Armstrong people accuse her of being too honest and open. On her blog, that does not make any money for her, she tells about many health challenges that she had to face and how others can avoid them including broken vagina syndrome and a prolapsed uterus. Actually I would like to help her so that someday she can start making money from her blog.
While still attending naturopathic college Erica Robinson had a baby girl and tells about that and also tells about her relentless search to find the very best way to raise her child. Unlike books, this blog is free to read and has many adventures in it that are true, not based on a true story.
Here is her website Whole Life Health Services. Just click on Blog at the top to go to her blog. This website says under About Erica:
I believe in living a Whole Life. I believe in having fun, eating dessert, enjoying the moments we share with loved ones, jumping into lakes, singing in the shower, and getting excited over food. I’m passionate about making my own skincare and helping others harness the power of Nature for anti-aging. I believe in helping babies come into this world in the healthiest way possible, and building a Whole Life right from the get-go. I believe in vacations, mental health days, and enjoying the beach. I also believe in You, and the power you hold to live abundantly and joyously.
