Mental Illness Stigma

An important notice is that mental illness is not a personality mistake or defect. It is not the fault of the person who is dealing with mental illness. A major problem for a person with mental illness is a modern society that is filled with preconception, stigma, and judgments.

People with mental illness occur from all areas of lifestyle. Mental illness can come upon teachers, doctors, nurses, truck drivers, attorneys, pastors. The federal government estimates that every year a possible amount of 25 percent of people in the United States is affected by mental illness.

A major barrier for individuals with mental illnesses is mental illness stigma. The stigma against mental health has improved slowly over the years, however, stigma should go away so much faster. Mental illness stigmas can cause destruction and problems but with education the stigmas can come to a complete end.

Men and women in modern day contemporary society feel apprehensive talking, speaking, discussing or even being familiar with, understanding, recognizing mental illness. Mainly because it is not like other health issues like diabetes, heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure. Many men and women fail to remember, just like all the other internal organs in the human body the brain is an internal organ too. The brain can also be prone to illness and disease just like the kidneys, liver, heart, and eyes. Many people are being treated for mental illness who are taking medication and doing very well, the same way another person is taking medication for blood pressure or cholesterol.
