Thyroid: Symptoms and Treatments

Our body works the perfect way and it does thanks to many small microorganisms that do everything accordingly to whatever is needed. These systems are usually glands that secrete hormones that interact with our cells and organs. One of the most important ones of these glands is the thyroid which is highly involved in our metabolic processes and produces most of the work in it. Yet, the thyroid could be one of the most complicated things to deal with when things go south with it.

The butterfly shaped gland is known from suffering through common problems that could happen to anyone. As simple as they are at first glance, if not treated and diagnosed properly, the thyroid will grow and produce larger problems such as cancer. There are two times when there could be issues with the gland. One of these is when it is not producing enough of its hormone and the other one when it is producing too much.

The excess hormone production creates hyperthyroidism, the more common of the two. The reasons as to why this happens are various, including inflammation of the gland, malfunction or cancerous growth and at times nodules that also secrete the hormone, doing the glands job. Either way, the treatment usually lies in drugs or surgery.

The decision on how to manage the situation is always the patients since each one has their consequences. What is absolutely imperative is to find out about it as soon as possible. At times the symptoms can be very hard to identify but we will get to that.

The lessening of the production of the hormone is called hypothyroidism. The cause is normally an issue with an autoimmune disease, thus creating confusion in the body and brain and leading your system to believe you do not need as much from the hormone as you actually do. There are ways to treat this naturally and with medication so the decision on how to face it has many options.

There are other problems that are less common, like the thyroid storm, the graves disease which both goes hand in hand with overproduction of the hormone. Then there is the swelling of the gland such as the goiter which is less problematic and the inflammation of it that can be rather painful and not many symptoms.

An element in the diet that is essential for the manufacture of hormones by the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland uses iodine to make thyroxine (T4), which has four iodine molecules attached to its structure, and triiodothyronine (T3), which has three iodine molecules attached.

Iodine deficiency is something to always pay attention when facing any problems with the thyroid gland. It is an absolute must-have when it comes to your metabolism and the hormone production. Found mostly in sea vegetables such as Kelp, Arame, Hiziki and Wakame, cranberries, organic yogurt, potatoes, navy beans, strawberries and cheese.

It is important that all these sources be natural and avoids having been tampered since it decreases the levels of iodine greatly. Eggs, tuna, salmon, shrimp, and cow milk are also great source of the mineral. The deficiency of such said mineral has been studied vastly and has proven to have a connection with the complications we suffer with our thyroid.

The Butterfly Shapped Gland Symptoms

Now, the symptoms of any actual problem can be hard to pinpoint at times but can really destroy your body and way of life. The most common symptoms are these:

  • Depression
  • Muscle ache
  • Tiredness
  • Hair loss
  • Dry skin
  • Numbness and tingling in fingers
  • Weight gain
  • Being overly sensitive to the cold
  • Slow process and movement
  • Irregular periods
  • Swelling of the neck
  • Constipation
  • Vision problems
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Forgetfulness

There are some more symptoms but those are the ones to look out for when it comes to Hyper or hypothyroidism. These conditions are most common in women but the percentage of men affected is quite high as well. Once aware that something is wrong with your body and going to the doctor to get checked up, they will be able to determine exactly what is wrong with a blood test and various questions. The blood test serves to tell how much of the hormone you have at the moment and can help the doctor pinpoint the problem better.

Even though hyperthyroidism is only treated with medicine and surgery, hypothyroidism does have some natural remedies you can try at home to better your condition. It is of course alternate medicine and will have a different impact on your body, not in any way similar to the tablets or supplements you could be taking from the doctor. The natural remedies are as follows if you want to try them:

Consume Iodine: Because the condition is caused due to a deficiency, which is usually a byproduct of small amounts of iodine and selenium, the consumption of it helps a great deal. Many find that a kelp diet is one of the best things to do when facing hypothyroidism. Some of the foods that contain this element are: Bread, seaweed, seafood, iodized and salt.

Get Coconut Oil: Avoid all other oils and use this one instead. Getting a small amount of it every day will aid in metabolism and energy. You can use it to cook too but it is not recommended since it can only cook at low heat.

Exercise: You might not feel like doing so but it will benefit you significantly. The body will attempt to regulate and work accordingly and will at times increase the hormone secretion if you are in motion every day.

Avoid Stress: You are already dealing with a condition that zaps your energy and well being away so being close to something or someone that makes you lose your mind is not exactly healthy either.

Get Lots of Fats and Protein in your Diet: They will both aid the body in hormonal balance and homeostasis, allowing the body to work its way back to normal.

There are many different things to do, eat and avoid but those are the most imperative ones if facing hypothyroidism. Just remember that if you are facing these symptoms in conjunction that you should not hesitate in visiting a doctor. Any complications with this thyroid can result in serious health problems and destroy your quality of life. So don't negate the fact that you are not feeling well and that you need attention since it could get worse.

These problems are very common so the treatments and ways to go about it are many and fix the issue quite rapidly. It all boils down to how you want to do things after the doctor has told you all the options you have available. Yet you could also stay on top of your health and how you feel so you don't have to face the choosing of the options. It may be a common problem but it does not mean you should not protect yourself from it and attempt to lead a healthier life.
