Good Home remedy for food poisoning that is safe and cheap

The Basics

Food poisoning is a common problem for millions of people in the world. It can be caused by several hundred different diseases, including E.coli and Salmonella, and can be life-threatening in some circumstances. The majority of the time, the symptoms will involve intestinal discomfort and diarrhea, possibly with dehydration. I cannot stress this enough --- if you are having severe pain, bloody diarrhea, or extreme bouts of vomiting, then consult your doctor immediately !

FYI: The medical term for food poisoning is microbial foodborne illness and is estimated to affect 75 million people a year just in the United States alone.

If you decide that your symptoms are not severe enough to require immediate medical attention, there is a fairly simple home remedy you can do to relieve the discomfort and greatly reduce the vomiting and trips to the bathroom. This is NOT medical advice, keep in mind. It's my own personal experience through trial and error. It's entirely up to you to decide if you want to seek treatment from a doctor. You may want to call your physician before you make a final decision.

Most Common Causes (Non-Meats)

The Center for Science in the Public Interest, or CSPI, has used millions of case studies to determine the foods that bring the biggest danger of foodborne illness. Some of these may be a little surprising.

Leafy greens and eggs are at the top of their list. This happens when they come into contact with contaminated water or animals. However, over half of the reports regarding eggs actually occur in restaurants.

Tuna is another big culprit. The biggest reason is that fresh fish will actually start to decay very shortly after being caught. So, you will want to be sure that you get your tuna from somewhere that you trust.

Other items that made this list include oysters, potatoes, cheese and sprouts.

It just goes to show you that you can never take for granted that everything you consume is safe. Take extra care where you do your dining and shopping. Another good idea is to pay attention to the news for reports of potentially contaminated foods being released to the public.

What You Need

Karo Syrup - Any corn syrup may work, but I've always used what has proven results.

(2) 32 oz. Gatorade drinks (any flavor) - I recommend that you use the original instead of the low calorie versions.

Straw - You can get a box of straws for a dollar if you don't have one handy.

Tablespoon

Instructions

1. Open a bottle of Gatorade and the Karo Syrup.

2. Pour two tablespoons of the syrup into your drink.

3. Use the straw to stir the drink for a few seconds. Do NOT shake it up. You will have better results with the syrup clinging to the bottom.

4. Slowly sip your drink through the straw. Drinking it quickly will affect your desired results.

5. Taking your time, try to finish the entire container in about 15 minutes.

6. Try not to move around much for the next hour or so, letting the solution settle into your stomach. The syrup is neutralizing the acid in your stomach while the gatorade helps with dehydration and giving you needed electrolytes.

7. Repeat the entire process after 3-4 hours.

8. Get lots of rest. You should notice a huge reduction in discomfort as the day goes on, especially after finishing off your 2nd bottle of the Gatorade/Karo syrup mix. Your body has gone through a rough experience, so be kind to it and take a nice long nap if you can.

As you begin to feel better, you will need to replenish your lost fluids and salt. The gatorade WILL definitely help with the fluids, but you still need to eat something to gain your strength back. Bland foods, such as crackers and potatoes, are typically easy on the stomach. You can also have some broth, soup, fruit juices, or perhaps some cooked carrots. Once you are eating, your recovery will speed up and before you know it, most of the discomfort will be just a memory.

      Thanks for this helpful information. I tend to have a very sensitive stomach, so I need all the help I can get with this problem. I will give this a try sometime.

      This is some great knowledge. I got food poisoning once and it was not pretty. I think I had salmonella. I just laid in bed all day in so much pain. I really felt like my body was had poison in it.

      Hahaha, I only got 66% for the quiz. A very practical hub! My mum found that drinking canned pineapple juice helps for minor food poisoning. But I didn't hear her say anything about sipping slowly, nor about not moving too much afterwards.

      The common cure when I was a kid was to take a spoonful of Coke syrup, (yes, Coca-cola syrup, uncarbonated) which was available from the pharmacy without a prescription. Your solution makes sense in that the Karo syrup and the electrolytes in the Gatorade would aid in recovery. I've had food poisoning a number of times, almost every time was after eating in a restaurant.
