When You Give Up On A Dream

Updated on December 17, 2014

On the Journey

When you give up on something you don't have to feel like a failure. To give up is huge. You say to yourself that you cant give up, but you know you have to or you'll go crazy. You could be giving up on a job, a person, a living situation, but this isn't the end. It could be the start of something else. Something new.

Giving up on something doesn't seem to be the best choice on the surface. But, I will say that sometimes we have to do just that to go on. Then we can rationalize that if it was meant to be it will happen. We just don't hope anymore. We can stop banging ourselves against the sideboards. We can feel relief to some extent. Not satisfaction. Slight relief.

Then what? You mourn? You treat it like it's a death. A loss. Well it is. What you're having to do here is to let go. It doesn't feel good and it doesn't feel right. Somehow I think dead wishes always feel wrong. If it didn't feel wrong to let go, that wouldn't be right. You wished for this and now you can't even imagine how you would feel if your wish came true at this very moment,You have to acknowledge all of this to move on.

The best way I can think of to go forward is to wish other wishes. To hope for different things. Make sure you hope for other things, it's necessary in this situation. It's not only necessary, it's imperative that you take action and start hoping for everything you've ever dreamed of. Because to get over that one big wish going unfulfilled, you're going to have to do a lot of hoping, wishing, and dreaming.'ll get to the point where your new hopes and dreams have surpassed anything you could have ever wanted before.

It's just hard to believe you could even think about other things considering the pain of the loss. Before you can get on with attempting something like another goal you have to repair yourself. Be good to yourself every chance you get. The good feeling will build up over time and turn into a great new perspective for you to run with.

When I glanced at your name that you published a new Hub, I got excited as I do all my favorite Hubbers. I related to this Hub. Voted up and across for ya, but it made me think. As passionate humans, it is our nature to dream. And to loose one of your dreams is only natural to be sad, it's part of you. But then again, survival mode kicks in, and a new dream is born.

Nice Hub I like your statement wish other wishes ~ I think that is a good concept when you need to let something go wishing new wishes is a good idea.

Peace in your stages and Blessings :)

Nice article, and well said. The world is full of broken dreams. I believe, as you obviously do, that it is those broken dreams that build us into what we are, and what we will be. Sometimes we (I) need to be reminded of that, which you so eloquently have done. Thank you Lisa. voted you up across the board.

I don't think giving up is a good thing. I think altering a wish or a path to get to that wish is good though. I have had so many wishes and goals go down the drain because of having no way to fulfill them. You just just have to find a different path to getting that wish or goal. Refocusing on new things or refocusing that same one can help not feel like it will not work. Never give up and keep thinking that it will work.

I want to thank you for writing this. There have been a lot of things in the past that I really wished had worked out and were still around today. This is certainly true with people I've known in the past and wished they were still with me today. I think refocusing on new wishes, as you said, brings us a step closer to embracing our new life...and being much happier with it. Voted this one as beautiful!
