Most Disturbing Diet Trends
The pressure to be thin is one of the most frustrating issues that young women and men are facing today. With the use of media, not only are younger children being exposed to the ideal of the perfect female and male body, but they are getting advice on which kind of foods to avoid in order to stay skinny.
After having an aunt that has just got admitted to a hospital for aneroxia and a pregnant sister who is struggling to avoid her craving for a easy bounce back to skinniness after birth, I thought this was a hub that needed to be written.
However when I was doing research on aneroxia/Bulmina, I found some diet trends that shocked me so much I decided to instead write about them.
Note: Avoid these diets. In fact avoid all diets and start being happy with your body. You are beautiful or handsome the way you are, stop obsessing over your body. If a person does not respect you due to your body then they do not deserve you. Please do not try these diets out.
Illegal in the United States and can only be bought online, there has been reports of people swallowing pills that has taenia eggs or more properly known as tapeworm eggs. If you are unfamiliar with tapeworms, they are a parasite that lives in the digestive system that feeds off the food the host eats.
So the rumor is that the person can eat all they want and the parasite will steal from the nutrition making the person in return lose weight. Once the person gets to the weight they want, they get rid of it by usually having to go to the hospital.
What people do not know is that this kind of parasite never stops growing and can cause the belly to swell as it gets bigger and bigger. This is described as a pot-belly so actually a person will swell outwards inside of get thinner. However if you decide to keep your new little friend in your belly the potbelly will eventually decrease.
the problem with this diet, other than the fact that you are hosting a parasite inside of you, is that it can cause many health issues that go along with having a lack of nutrition.
The symptoms that can be seen include:
- Abdominal pain
- Hunger or loss of appetite
- Weight loss
- Vitamin and mineral deficiencies (webmd)
This is not to mention that the tapeworm segment that you swallow can get to be as large as 30 feet and somehow has to survive your stomach without causing to burst and at the same time releasing tapeworm segments through your digestive system which can get stuck in intestines or gut and cause blockage and can travel outside of the digestive system and infect other parts of your body which can be fatal.
Come on, do you want something like this in your stomach:
Cotton Balls Yum!
Here is a fresh diet trend that has just been noted earlier this year. This is the cotton ball diet where people dip cotton balls in some sort of juice or sauce and then digest the cotton balls. The diet claims to work because the juice makes the cotton taste better but the cotton ball is actually a stratch so it makes a person feel full but yet has little to no calories. This makes a person be able to eat only one meal a day and yet not feel hungry even through they are skipping two meals.
Reason this diet does not work: It does not really stop the feeling of hunger and in order to not feel hungry a person will have to eat a lot of dipped cotton balls. Although cotton balls are less gross than the tapeworm diet, the consequences are dire. Cotton balls have no nutrition so a person can start losing bone density, lose their hair, and organ function which can lead to death. There is also a chance that the balls can get stuck in disgestive track and can cause a blockage that can cause it to develop necrotizing fasciitis which can be fatal.
Why Chew When There Are Tubes?
The next disturbing diet trend is something that makes little sense. People are using feeding tubes to lose weight. This is a short diet, usually it lasts no longer than ten days. The diet named K-E involves putting a tube down a person's throat and over the day, fluid of protein and water are transferred from a bag into their stomach from the tube. The person will not eat food for the whole period of ten days.
This diet does seem to work and people do lose a lot of weight while using it however imagine having a feeding tube for ten whole days and once the person starts to eat again, they gain the weight back really quickly. However there seems to be very little consequences other than slight damage to organs and muscle decay and the possibility of baggy skin due to losing too much weight too fast.
Cancer Pills Great, Sign Me Up!
The next diet trend includes a Japanese pill called Xiushentang and claims to be a breakthrough in fast working diet pills that promises a success rate of losing two pounds every day and are said to release fat from the body. For the first three days, a person is supposed to take two pills at the morning time, and after that it goes to three pills. It is said to work only with constant daily exercise of half an hour or longer and a moderation of food.
Why this is so disturbing? One of the ingredients is phenolphthalein which is a well-known carcinogen and although ingredient is sibutramine which causes heart attacks and strokes.
First started as a false cure of Autism, the Gluten-Free Diet is one of the quickest fad to be picked up. For people who have caliac c disease, the diet is a way of life because of all of the problems they have when they eat gluten. However for healthy people who have no allergies to gluten this causes a lot of health risks that can lead to death.
In fact in doing research, most sites claim that gluten-free diet will cause an increase a enegry, decrease in weight. However let it be known, the only people who should be on this diet are those suffering from caliac disease.
The problem lies that foods that have gluten are heavy in nutrition that our bodies need. Definitely in foods like whole grain wheat bread that lower the risks for type 2 diabetics, heart attack, and forms of cancer (webmd). In fact studies have shown that gluten-free products tend to be low in a wide range of important nutrients, including B vitamins, calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium, and fiber (webmd).
The good news is that there are a lot more gluten-free products and vitamins that can help offset any vitamin deficiency if only by a little. However going gluten-free products do not make any real difference in terms of a person's health or weight unless they have the allergy to gluten.
Finally And Probably The Worst-Wire Keeps The Weight Away
Probably one of the most disturbing trends has to be the act of wiring your jaw shut to lose weight. This is pretty simple, brackets are placed on the top and bottom teeth and then a wire is placed in between and positioned so your mouth is always partially closed so speaking and drinking can still be used but your mouth is not opened enough for food to get in.
If that is not enough, the person has to sit in a dental seat for forty minutes while they perform the procedure and then they are told that they need to drink as much nutritious drinks as possible since they cannot eat for as long as they decide to keep their jaw shut. However it is suggested that the wire be taken out every four to six weeks for two to four day period to stretch out the jaw and to eat solid foods during the time period (annecollins.com). it is also suggested that a person always keeps wire cutters in case of throwing up and other emergencies.
Although the risks are not very high as long as you follow the directions to get it removed every four to six weeks, the price is very expensive and there are chances of getting your wires trapped on material. The weight loss does happen but the minute it stops the weight gain is almost immediate. So it is a costly procedure for a very temporary weight loss.
Instead of diets, it is better for a person to exercise and eat less. Following the food pyramid chart, it is easier to ingest the right amount of calories and nutrition that your body needs than to try some bizarre diet fad that can end up hurting you in the long-run. Better yet, lose weight to be healthier but don't lose weight to be thin.
