Why Are My Periods Getting So Heavy And Painful Now I Am Nearing The Menopause ?
Uterine Fibroids And The Perimenopausal Woman
Many of we ladies of a certain age will no doubt realize when we have entered the perimenopause stage of our lives, the time when our periods become irregular and before they cease altogether.
Some of us will feel sad about our advancing age and our lack of ability to bear children. Some of us will jump for joy that we will soon no longer be dragged down every month by our periods and look forward to freedom from them.
I was of the latter mind set as had suffered from PMS and all that entails for years. Quite frankly I was looking forward to leaving all that behind.
Despite suffering badly from PMS, my monthlies had always been regular as clockwork and blood loss light. I knew I was perimenopausal because of my age and also slight irregularity of my monthly cycle, plus I had been to the doctor and had a blood test which also confirmed this.
All seemed to be going well until one day I had a period so heavy and painful it scared the living daylights out of me. Never in my fertile life had I experienced anything like this.
As one does, I just put it down to a blip and blamed it on the advancing menopause, but when my periods continued to be heavy and excruciatingly painful I booked myself an appointment with the doctor.
After discussing the problem with her she told me I had classic symptoms for a uterine fibroid and booked me in for an ultrasound examination which reveled that in fact I did.
My fibroid was tiny, only about 2 centimeters altogether and I couldn´t believe that something this tiny could cause so much pain and bleeding. Thinking back to other female friends who had them and reported them to be the size of an orange, it made me wonder how on earth they coped , but they did and there are treatments available which I will discuss later.

What Are Uterine Fibroids ?
Uterine fibroids are benign, non cancerous tumors which develop in or around the womb (uterus).
Although they can develop in woman of a much younger age I am going to discuss solely those affected during the middle and later stages of their reproductive years.
Uterine fibroids are thought to be caused by an imbalance in hormone levels, and obviously this fits the bill with woman in the perimenopausal phase of life.
Common Symptoms Of Uterine Fibroids
Heavier blood loss and painful cramps during a period.
Blood loss or spotting between periods.
Urinary problems which can include the need to urinate more frequently or with more urgency, or urine retention.
Abdominal discomfort and bloating.
Pain or discomfort during love making.
Infertility in a small percentage of women.
NB- Uterine Fibroids growing outside the uterus may cause no symptoms whatsoever but those growing inside most possibly will and the changes are usually gradual.
In my case my doctor advised no treatment because I had been perimenopausal for quite some time and she knew that my periods would be stopping altogether very soon. Once this happens and it did quite quickly for me, all symptoms naturally disappear. I simply took a strong painkiller when needed and placed a hot water bottle on my tummy during times when I had painful cramps during a period.
Other treatments include.
Medications to control symptoms.
Medications to shrink the tumor or tumors.
Low dose birth control pills.
Myomectomy or radio frequency ablation.
Uterine artery ligation.
Magnetic resonance guided focused ultrasound.
Surgery to remove the tumor or tumors.
Whilst researching this hub I read that soy may be helpful in dissolving uterine fibroids,I also learned from a reader of one of my other hubs ( link below ) that fermented organically raised soy is the best.
Soy also worked for me when I started getting Hot flushes / flashes
Treatment may also be needed in the form of iron supplements if heavy blood loss has caused anemia.
