Updated on January 16, 2011

Underactive Thyroid Weight Gain

It is estimated that more than 200 million people worldwide suffer from thyroid problems. If you have an underactive thyroid you know that one of the most frustrating symptoms is weight gain. Once you gain weight it becomes really hard to lose that extra weight. It seems that no matter what you do or how hard you try to lose weight with underactive thyroid it's impossible.

Although it seems to be impossible it's not, you just have to know the right way to go about it. You have to have determination to stick with the program and not give up easily. Any time a person wants to lose weight is hard but it's extremely hard when you have thyroid issues.

Why Do You Gain Weight With Underactive Thyroid?

The reason weight gain is such a problem with an underactive thyroid is because your metabolism is controlled by the your thyroid gland. When your thyroid gland doesn't produce enough hormones, your metabolism slows to a crawl. Your metabolism is what gives you the energy to exercise.

Without these much-needed hormones your body slows down to the point that you don't feel like exercising. You know what it feels like when you don't get enough sleep, your body feels sluggish, all you feel like doing is laying down and sleeping. Well this is what it feels like to have your metabolism not working correctly. So you see this is why exercise becomes so hard to do when you have an underactive thyroid.

Does Exercise Help with Underactive Thyroid

Believe it or not exercise will help an underactive thyroid. Although it is hard to get started if you will push yourself you will see that you will feel much better and have more energy. Exercise is known to boost the metabolism. I know it's hard when all you feel like doing is laying down and sleeping all the time, but if you will find the time to just exercise 10 to 15 min. a day you will see a drastic improvement in the way you feel.

If you will start out with just walking and keep it simple to start with it will be much easier for you. You can gradually increase your walk time until you are up to about 30 to 45 min. per day you will find that you will feel much better and have more energy. Try making time to walk three days a week, you can increase that as you feel better. Once you get into the routine you will find that you miss it if you skip days. You will see noticeable improvement in the way you feel.

Underactive Thyroid Diet

If you are ready to start a weight loss program, it will help you to follow an underactive thyroid diet. You can't expect to lose weight and still eat at fast food restaurants. You may have to give up some of your favorite treats, but it will be worth it when you see the pounds start to shed. It won't always be easy, but it will be worth the effort.
