Why It's Important To Express Yourself

Updated on February 11, 2018

Self-expression Isn't Just Healthy. It's Art.

Why It’s Important To Express Yourself

As a kid or a teenager, you may want to change certain things. Maybe you want to dye your hair a different color or give yourself an edgy look. Sometimes you’ll want to change your style from wearing pink dresses and high heels to leather jackets and skinny jeans with boots. And there are even times when you’ll want to take up new hobbies that your parents aren’t familiar with or used to. Like art or playing the guitar. Some people even go farther as to make a career with their creative minds.

It’s incredibly important to express yourself and how you’re feeling. I’d go as far to say it’s healthy. When you don’t express yourself in one way or another, you’re actually bottling your feelings up and that could set you up for a breakdown in one way or another. Not everyone is the same, but that’s what I’ve experienced. Expressing yourself lets you get how you’re feeling out, it’s less stress for you, you can feel more relaxed, and there’s a number of different ways you can do it.

It could be by talking to people, painting a portrait or spray painting something. Just make sure it belongs to you and not someone else. You could also start working out or going for a run. You could write short stories or poetry or even plain journal entries. One thing I grew up doing was writing Fanfiction, which is taking the plot from a TV show or book, but adding your own plot to it, or creating your own. Something that a lot of people do is take up a sport and focus all of their negative energy into that.

A few ways you can express yourself in a physical way is changing your look. You’re growing. You don’t wanna wear little girl dress forever, and if you do, that’s okay. There are numerous ways to express yourself that way. You can dye your hair blue or green if you want. Cut it. Go from heels to sneakers and vice versa. Maybe you want to wear more makeup. It’s in your control. You can do that too. And all of the things I listed are just a few things out of many things you can do express yourself.

Once you find the perfect way to express yourself, whether it’s through art or sports, or even just writing journal entries, you’ll feel you’ll have a way to get whatever you’re feeling off your chest and it’ll feel amazing compared to keeping it all bottled inside.

And have fun while doing it!

Very true! Self-expression is incredibly important and I can tell you firsthand that it is sometimes the only way we can find relief. Nice work!
