Why Spark People is a Great Website for Weight Loss

Updated on July 6, 2011

It's Free!

There are numerous weight loss sites that you can join to inspire, encourage and teach you in your weight loss efforts. Most of them cost money to get the full benefits. My favorite one is also free: Spark People. It’s now advertised in fitness magazines and been mentioned on television shows. With all of the growth and attention, I’m glad to know it’s still free to become a member.

What is Spark People?

Spark People is a lot like Facebook. You get your own profile page and people can become your friends and post on your page or send you a private message. Of course, the big difference is that everyone has the same goal, weight loss. That common goal brings everyone together beyond age, race, gender, careers, financial level and all other differences. It’s a reminder that everyone is more the same than they are different.

Once you set up your profile page, there are several applications that will help you in your weight loss. You can post what you eat and how much you exercise in your trackers. These trackers can be private if you choose. You can also track your weight and measurements as well as any other goals you set for yourself. It helps to keep you accountable.

You can mingle with the other members by joining groups or visiting the message boards. This is a good way to make friends on the site. And if you’re looking for motivation, you can visit the blogs. For education, you can read a lot of great articles. Many of these articles are written by the experts on Spark People. They have nutrition and fitness coaches who can give advice and information. They often post on the message boards to answer questions in their field of expertise. There are exercise videos and recipes to help with the dieting and exercise goals you make for yourself.

When you’re wondering if you’ll ever make it to your goal, you can scan the success stories by other people who have lost the weight they needed to and find one to inspire you. You can also write your own blog to tell of your achievements and frustrations.

It’s hard to believe that all of this is on one website and even more shocking that it’s free. It’s truly a great way to help you achieve your own weight loss goals and a great companion for the long journey.

I love SparkPeople. I have not been as active as I should be, but I used it several years ago to lose some weight and two years ago when I lost 80 pounds. Unfortunately, I started working an insane job that left no time for workouts and gained 90 back. So off I go to SparkPeople now that I am not working 80 hours a week and this time I am going to learn to KEEP IT OFF! Thanks for sharing this hub!
