What Is Homocysteine? What You Need To Know.

What is homocysteine? It’s an amino acid found in the blood and studies have shown that too much of it is NOT good for our health. It can lead to heart disease, stroke and now researchers have found a connection to Alzheimer’s Disease in women.

A study conducted in Sweden that followed women for 35 years, found that those with high levels of homocysteine were twice as likely to develop Alzheimer’s Disease.  No one needs to up his or her risk for heart disease or stroke, let alone Alzheimer’s Disease when the solution is an easy one.

Homocysteine levels are affected by our diet and genetics. But the vitamins with the most impact are folic acid, and vitamins B6 and B12, which breakdown homocysteine levels in the blood.

Naturally, you should eat a diet with foods that are rich in B vitamins: spinach, parsley, broccoli, turnips, salmon, asparagus, romaine letter, calf’s liver, salmon, lentils, bell peppers. But if these foods turn you off, you can always supplement with a good B Vitamin complex.

Get your homocysteine levels tested: A simple blood test will determine your homocysteine levels. Ask your doctor! Optimum levels are below 7-8 umol/L
