As we have detailed, yoga is great for the lungs, the muscles and for stability. But it is also good for knee joints. Muscles are the armor that protect our joints. This is especially true for the knees.

What the posters don't always showcase is the importance of deep breathing. Building up your lunge capacity is just as important as your heart muscle, leg muscles and your abs. Your aim should be a full body workout - so please don't forget the lungs.

The plank is a great exercise for strength and for stability. A strong core is essential in preventing injuries from trips and falls. Yoga is a testament to longevity. The plank is a hard exercise, the slow controlled movement of yoga combined with proper deep breathing.
The photo to the right is the side plank pose. Be sure to do the exercise evenly on both sides. As I say to my clients - no favorite children, no favorite sides. It is essential for our health to keep our muscles in balance. The only exception is during an injury - follow your therapist advice.

Yoga Lunge Exercise
Lunges are so misunderstood. IF done correctly, lunges are one of the best exercises for your body. Remember, our longest and largest muscles are in our legs. Lunges target tone our leg muscles and can speed weight loss. If we can change our muscle structure, we can change metabolism.
Why are lunges misunderstood? Because of the knees. It appears that the lunge would engage the knee joint - however, for those who are healthy, when the lunge is performed properly, the lunge engages the muscles that protect the knee joint.

Downward dog is a fantastic exercise for the lower back muscles and the hamstrings (the muscles behind the knee). Downward dog stretches the muscles that your back needs. Additionally, downward dog is helpful for aging females over 40. Females over 40 have a high probability of experiencing a frozen shoulder. The name frozen shoulder doesn't do the illness justice because it is extremely painful and almost fully debilitating. Stretches are key to preventing injuries. A regular exercise program such as yoga is great for both the mind and the body.
