Yoga Nidra Meditation – a Kind of Alertness that You've Probably Never Felt Before

Updated on September 25, 2012

The word Nidra, in Sanskrit, denotes sleep. So what does yoga-nidra meditation mean – that you're allowed to fall asleep as you meditate?

Not likely. Yoga nidra meditation is a meditation technique that has you calming your mind down to the point of staying completely mentally still. Once you learn how to practice meditation of this kind well, you're likely to notice that it restores and refreshes the way sleep does, sometimes it can go even further than that.

It's a curious thing what yoga nidra meditation can do for you. Once you learn to practice the technique correctly, you are usually able to help your mind relax and arrive at a state of calm. But your mind is more alert and more aware than it's ever been as well. This curious state of relaxed alertness is what takes you from a state of relaxed nidra and actually makes it a form of yoga.

The thing about truly relaxing your body is that the feeling of being refreshed doesn't really come unless you are really aware of everything about your body through the relaxation process. When you fall asleep at night, your mind and body almost completely shut down. You certainly aren't aware of your body then. For this reason, the kind of freshness that you get at the end isn't as great as it should be. It isn't as deep as it could be if you could be truly and deeply aware of your existence while you relaxed like that. People who discover yoga nidra meditation find that when the practice the technique correctly, it charges them up in a way they've never felt before. When they are ready to fall asleep at night, they don't fall into bed and out like a light either. Awareness of this kind can really deeply change your life.

If you have practiced yoga and have noticed that it doesn't really do for you what you always expected it would, you could try concluding your yoga sets with a few minutes of yoga nidra meditation. After the strenuous exertion of your yoga exercices, to let your body and mind slide into a state of meditation like this could really leave you feeling refreshed and wanting more.

What else could you expect with a meditation technique that has you going closely over every part of your body in a way that really arouses your nervous system? It's a rejuvenation process that can truly leave you feeling awakened.
