Christianity & The Law of Attraction
I'm sure by now you have heard about 'The Law of Attraction' and maybe have possibly read on the topic of how your mind effects your life. I don't consider myself to be labeled 'new ager' but the older I get, the more I realize things aren't as 'black and white' as I used to think they were.
When Oprah introduced 'The Secret' which spoke about 'The Law of Attraction' I found myself intrigued by it, both because of the possibility it could be right, but because I also found myself fighting the truth behind it at the same time. The first thing that came to my mind was 'this is the whole "name it and claim it" Christianity movement going into the world. I was immediately appalled at the thought of there being any truth to what they were saying. Like everything else I have questions about, I immediately talked to God about it and asked Him what the truth was about the whole issue.
I had talked to Him many times before about the whole 'name it claim it' thing because I was angry that Christians were 'expecting' to be blessed by God just because they were His 'kids'. That really got under my skin. As I would watch on television or read in a book, these people would focus totally on wealth and prosperity and I felt like they were using God as a 'vending machine'. They would put in a dollar (prayer) and out comes their answer (wealth) and all because they 'expected' it to happen. I was extremely offended at the movement because I felt like they were 'using' God to get rich quick and it infuriated me.
So, that being the case, when the whole "Law of Attraction" came out, I started studying Scripture to see if there was any truth to this whole thing. According to the experts, 'The Law of Attraction' is just like the "Law of Gravity". It's universal and there's nothing a human being on earth can do to change it or manipulate it. And just like the Law of Gravity, it is constantly at work and never stops. It basically is the same thing as 'Cause and Effect' or 'Sowing and Reaping". So, in studying the Scriptures, I found the following quotes:
For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.
Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things
And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.
28 And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord.
29 Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.
30 And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it.
Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.
Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.
And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.
Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.
Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.
Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.
Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.
1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.
2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.
For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.
Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.
After reading the evidence, I found myself talking to God more intently on the issue. I wanted to know the TRUTH about what HE thought on this issue. He immediately brought me to a couple of things He had taught me in the past. He is our creator/father and being our 'parent', He wants only the best for us at all times. He always blessed those patriarchs in the Bible that had a close relationship with HIm such as Abraham and others. He spoke through the writers in the Scriptures in order to teach us the 'do's' and 'don'ts' of how to live a blessed life. However, it's up to US as to whether or not we follow those rules. When we choose not to follow them, we end up suffering the consequences of those actions, just as our own children suffer when they make wrong choices.
On the other hand, just like many things in life, the "Law of Attraction" is indeed truth, but has been 'used' to attract wealth more than anything else in life. People today want more and more THINGS and they will do anything they can to get them. God already told us that if we 'seek FIRST the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, ALL these things will be added unto us'. But we have perverted that to focusing on the 'gifts' and not 'the giver' of those gifts. So, those people want and EXPECT toys from God because they are His kids, yet they never really love Him for who He IS Himself - only what He can give them.
When God explained these things I told Him I would try it out for myself to see if it was true. I actually made a 'vision board' and I cut out a picture of a little baby in a magazine that looked like me and posted it on my board. I had wanted a granddaughter someday that would look like me so I put that as my first 'wish'. Then I posted a picture of an old man and woman sitting together as a wish that my husband and I would grow old together. My third picture I posted was of a beautiful home that we could retire in as the home we had lived in for sixteen years was old and needed much repair. And my fourth picture was one of me when I was younger and thinner. My wishes were that I would grow old with my husband in a new beautiful home and have a granddaughter that looked like me and my health would get better and better.
After making the board I put it up in the closet and really never thought about it much again. My 'wishes' were there, but I just left them up to God and didn't worry about them. Well, today, three years later, I am happy to report that I have a granddaughter that looks very similar to me. I live in a new beautiful home back in my home town. However, I don't think those things have come true because I made a 'vision board' and visualized these things happening in my life. I think they have come true because I love my Dad in Heaven more than I love this life on earth. Nothing in this life is as important as He is to me. Even in the hardest of times in my life, He remains my 'Daddy' and I trust Him, even if I don't understand what He's allowing to happen to me and I'm throwing a 'two year old temper tantrum'. And because I love Him more than anything, He rewards that love with 'all these things' added unto me.
Do I think the Law of Attraction is real? Yes. Do I think we should use it for wealth? No. I think that when we love God above all else, everything will come to us exactly as He promised. It may take longer than we would like, but it WILL happen. Our minds are a very powerful thing and the words we speak are even more powerful. We need to take every thought 'captive' to see if it is positive and true. We need to speak only positive things, both over ourselves and over others.
This whole issue has been a very intensely debated topic among Christians and non-Christians alike. If you decide to test it for yourself, just make sure that you have your priorities in the right place. Don't focus on wealth or the 'things' in life that aren't important. Keep God first and above all else as your highest 'love' in your life, and He WILL reward you with your dreams come true. He promises that and God is not capable of lying. And just as you want more for your own children than you want for yourself, so does God want more for you than you could ever dream for. Trust in that love and rest in His lap and see if your world doesn't change.....
