Detailed Design Coloring Pages

Adult coloring pages and books are one of the best way to relax and be creative.

They are great for reducing stress and setting your mind free. If you loved to color as a child, or you want an interesting hobby that results in a work of art, why not try making your own artwork based on the detailed design books and posters drawn by artists.

You can choose from very detailed patterns and drawings to sketches, abstract images and realistic scenes. Find the level of complexity that fits your style, then add your own colors and patterns and textures.

NOTE: All pages linked from this page are rated G and suitable for viewing by everyone. If you're looking for mature content coloring books for adults you can find a good selection at Amazon or your local bookstore.

All samples in this article (except for commercial printed books or posters for sale) are my original artwork or clearly noted public domain images.

You will see many examples of my drawings on this page. I also offer my own original paper crafts, clip art and coloring pages for all ages free (for noncommercial, personal use only) at my web sites (find details in my profile).

My original designs for coloring range from realistic pictures to abstract designs including mandalas, hip retro patterns, travel scenery, posters, Celtic art and tattoo patterns.

Colored Pencils Rule - They're the Number 1 Choice of Colorists - I love my Prismacolor set of pencils for coloring and design work

I draw in pen and ink or on the computer, then add color and shading with colored pencils. I own and use this set of Prismacolor pencils plus I've got a tin of water-soluble pencils that take on the look of watercolors when you brush them with a slightly damp paintbrush.

Make Art for Yourself

Design Your Own Coloring Pages. How to Make Line Art from Photos

I like to design graphics using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop tools: brushes, fonts and custom shapes.

If you have a favorite snapshot you can convert it into an artistic coloring page with a few simple adjustments in your favorite image editing program or you can trace the image using a light table or by taping the picture to a window and using another sheet of paper over the photo.

If you make art from copied photos, there's no copyright worry, but don't use a photograph owned by someone else to make artwork or illustrations to publish in any commercial publication.

Illustration of chopper motorcycle is my own work, featured at Clip Art and Crafts printable for non commercial use.

I've always been a colored pencil lover. I color with markers, pastels, paints, pens and crayons, but my first choice of coloring tools is my collection of blendable colored pencils. To get more artsy I use a bit of water on a brush to create a wash, or add outlines and details with fine line permanent ink markers.

5 Creative Crafts to Make with Line Art and Coloring Book Pictures

Complex Celtic coloring page design

Try these ideas for creative crafts you can make with coloring picture art and line drawings.

1. Use line simple drawings as templates for fabric crafts such as applique or embroidery. Here's an embroidery project created from a simple drawing. It's colored in with, yep, crayons.

2. Print out patterns to use as templates for paper crafts, including designs for cards or collages.

3. Make your own t-shirt or tote bag transfers from pictures you've enlarged and printed, then add color to the designs with fabric paints or heat-set crayons.

4. For a great party activity, print out several design sheets to assemble into a creative "wall of fame" project. Let guests color in the pictures (or embellish with paper, glitter and other materials) and add their signatures. This is fun for everyone and works great as a team-building event.

5. Use line drawings to make unique die cuts for scrapbooking and card making, or try some paper embroidery or cut paper crafts.

I never realized how many adults like to color. When I was a kid, I loved to draw, but as an adult mother of four kids, I never had time to indulge. These days, I hardly have time for anything but writing....maybe one of these days I can treat myself with some of these things. Love the colors.

When I was in school, we had to sell these poster to get money for the school. My parents always bought me a poster because I loved them so much. They soon disappeared and no matter where I looked, no one could tell me where to find them. A few weeks ago I found DoodleArt and there they were and they expanded! Unfortunately they are not well known in South Africa and to buy them from Amazon is going to cost me a pretty penny. Even as a grown up I love to colour things in - it is the best stress buster there is!

I have not done much coloring as an adult. I used to enjoy it as a child. If it is that relaxing, maybe I should consider taking it back up! I never knew there were so many choices of pictures to color. Wow!
