There is a lot of scaremongering about 'germs'. While a certain amount of hand hygiene and hygiene during eating and food preparation is very important. this constant bombardment about germs being everywhere is a keen selling strategy for antiseptic wipes, sprays etc. In fact these preparations cause more damage to the environment than the germs themselves.
We are seeing a huge rise in auto-immune diseases these are diseases where the immune system attacks our own body. One theory is this is the price of excessive hygiene and that the 'immune system' which is our own local army gets bored and starts attacking anything and everything as it goes without challenge. We are also seeing a lot of eczema and other skin conditions due to constant cleansing as the skin loses its natural defenses and goes very drive. Media makes a big deal about germs and stirs up a public frenzy.
There are some germs we need to be frightened of- salmonella, influenza, clostridium, tetanus etc but a lot of germs just co-exist and a lot more help our protect our body. Yeast infections happen if our natural commensal germs ( local protectors) die off and are replaced by more parasitic yeast growth. We need to have a 'sensible' strategy about microbes-- not go looking for 'weapons of mass destruction' in everything!!! sorry for the long rant.
