Count your calories.  This is the easiest way to keep yourself in check when it comes to eating.

(P.S. there isn't only one rule)

You first need to get focused on what it is you want to acheive with the weight loss.

If you want the weight off for good you need to change you eating habits permanently and start to find time to exercise everyday.

If you are just losing weight for a special occasion then you just need to make some small changes but exercise more until you reach your weight loss goal, however the weight will return if you don't make a complete dietary change.

And yes there isn't just one rule there are many ways that you can this the trick is finding the one that suits you and works.

Here is my answer which hopefully helps before undertaking exercise and dieting:
        * check out for food allergies/intolerances
        * cleanse your colon (remove mucoid plaque)
        * eliminate unrecognised parasites in your body (ie candida, etc)
        * Detox, drink lots of water, sweat it out
        * avoid drinking alcohol
        * check for hormonal imbalances
        * relax. relax. relax

Review any medications that you are taking to ensure that they aren't causing the weight gain and see if any can be switched to a variety that may promote weight loss.

Eat the right kinds of foods....the foods that we were designed to eat....

    *Avoid Sugar
*Avoid anything that you can't pronounce...
*If you do eat animals, go as organic as you can.  Cows were meant to eat grass not grain...
*Avoid things you wouldn't eat in its natural state (breads, grains, potatoes, ect)

The simple fact is that we, as a species, still haven't evolved enough to handle the types of foods we are eating.

The main rule you're going to need to follow is:

Take in less calories than you burn in a day.

You can achieve this in 2 ways...

Eat less than you normally do
    -or-
    Be more active

Doing one or the other is going to get you close to losing weight, but doing both will help you get there faster.  If I were to chose one over the other, I would choose to modify my eating habits first.

The answer is simple. The one rule to lose weight begins with psychology. When your mind is focused and you find the motivation you need to overcome all the obstacles to your weight, you can begin to lose weight.

This element is probably the most challenging part of losing weight and to changing your lifestyle. But once you change your internal programming, your actions will follow.

Most of us know that healthy eating and exercise is what is required to lose weight. If you change your mindset, all the rest becomes easy.

I agree. Many people mix up body signals and eat when their body really wants water. Drink water first when "hungry." Wait for 20 minutes. If still hungry, then eat something healthy.

Your calorie intake must be lower than the enegy you burn each day. Metabolism must stay high, so do Not starve yourself through the day. Eat small "meals" about 5 to 6 times a day.

For me, the "main" and the "core" golden rule to lose weight is your self-determination. If your mind stay strong enough for reminding you everyday to lose weight, then you will stay confidently with your ideal weight. Weight loss take years, but it is achievable. I used to go through a remarkable fat-slim-fat-slim weight loss experiences and there's once my highest weight reached 185 lbs.........So if you think you want to pursue a better life, then you must learn how to pursue a presentable outlook, of course besides healthy body and smart mind...

I agree with Bendo13.  Take in less calories than you burn in a day.  Be sensible.  Eat enough to make you satisfied but not so much you feel stuffed and don't deny yourself foods you love just eat smaller portions.

One of the things that helped me lose weight fairly quickly without much work (exercise) was to get rid of all sodas, coffee, tea, shakes, etc.  All I drank morning, noon and night was water.  Within 2 weeks I had lost 6 pounds and I had changed nothing except just to drink water instead of anything else. This actually got me motivated to doing a little exercise so i started walking about 30 minutes in the evening and after 1 month my total weight loss was 10 pounds.

    Hope this helps!

Since it is only one* rule to lose weight.

Usually if a person cuts back to 1500 calories a day (cut back if you stay at the same weight after two weeks), they will lose weight.

That is only since I could add one rule. The best way is to cut back on calories and work out. The problem with only cutting back on calories is if you are starving yourself your body will turn you muscle into fat which gives you no real gains. The best way to lose weight is to cut calories to a healthy portion and spend sometime at a gym/track.

Drink 7 glasses of water a day

Its a fact that every human being on this earth needs water to survive, but for those who are trying to lose weight; water is an essential addition in dieting. More water in your body means more cleansing of the body organ's impurities. This will have a profoundly positive effect on your body by converting the excess fats in to pure energy.

The only and most important rule to weight loss is honesty.  Don't lie to yourself about what you are eating and drinking and it will be easy for you to cut out the extras and lose weight without a lot of exercising.

    Well, for one,
    * you must increase your intake of liquids. And that doesn't mean soft drinks! Or sugary juices....
*drink water, green tea with sugar substitute.
*Cut out the sugar. You wouldn't believe the difference this will make.
*Cut back on white breads. Go whole grain or the 'No sugar added variety'.
*Eat low cal, low point items late in the day or in the evening.
    * Excercise more, even if it's brisk walking 20 minutes a day, or every other day.

When you feel the urge to eat something which you know is unhealthy, high in fat etc.

Ask yourself, “Do I really want this?”

If you are honest with yourself and you are committed to your weight loss (more importantly creating a healthier and better quality of life), you will make the best decision for you.

Eat foods that are high in nutrition. You body needs fuel and dieting or restricting your caloric intake will actually cause you to retain fat and gain weight.

You have to give your can clean fuel, so why would that be any different for a high tech machine like your body? Feed yuor body the best fuel you can find. That would be nutrient dense, raw fruits and veggies.

    Everything in Moderation.
Don't over eat, over sleep, over play, over work, over excercise.
Try not be addicted or obsessed with a "thing".
Moderate your activities and your food intake.  Life maybe short but it's the longest thing we're ever going to do, so take it easy, there's plenty.

The best way to shed some weight is to monitor your daily intake of calories over a week (or 2) you can then work out the average amount of calories you intake per day then simply deduct a respecable amount from this.

To lose an average of 1Lb a week you would need to cut out around 500 calories per day from your diet. This being said some people would find this hard to just cut back 500 calories. If this describes you then start with a smaller cut back and allow your body to adjust, this way your natural average daily/weekly calorie intake will be reduced making futher calorie reductions easier.

Also foods with lower calories that make you feel full are also advisable to help take away hunger periods. The best advice is to find a path that you are happy and comfortable with and slowly build upon that jumping in at the deepend and cutting out everything in 1 go will usually leave you hungry and disheartened and more likely to give up.

You can also combine this with workouts to futher burn calories.

If there is only one rule, the rule should be:
    Don't eat junk/processed food.

You can take in less calories than your resting metabolic rate but if all those are made out of junk food, you will still gain fat.

Of course preferably you should add another rule and it would be exercise.
