Medication is not the cure, but in many many cases it is part of the soution. If you tell someone with a very serious case of clinical depression. bipolar, schizophrenia or some other mental illness (notice I use the term illness) they just may committ suicide. Not because they are sinful, although suicide is obviously a sin, But the biochemical malfunction in the brain suddenly going without medication or any other treatment, can put someone so desperate to stop the pain, that they do themselves in because they don't see any hope. God did not remove the pain or the deprssion so they feel even worse that they have failed spiritually and wonder if God is mad at them or stopped loving them.People with mental illness don't think right, see right, or behave right. Not because they have a spiritual deficit, but because their brain disorder symptoms manifest in those areas. So people who don't understand mental illness think it's just the persons failure to trust God and obey him.
If you are a Christian man, a pastor or other church leader, and you tell someone to go off their medication because God is their all in all, you will answer to God when the person ends up in the hospital or suicidal. Mental illness is an ILLNESS.
some people with depression are not depressed because of a life long battle with clinical depression and may be able to get through it without medication, or be on it for a short time. But you Apostle Jack are not the one to make that judgement.
Mental illness does affect people spiritually, but that is not the cause. There is a saying out in the world, and sometimes in the church that says. "Why do Christians shoot their wounded?" If you shame someone for taking medication you are not loving that person, you are tearing them down. They need your love and support, and your prayers. Certainly God is our all in all. But people get sick. If they get sick and take medication it does not mean they are not a person of faith. Christian music, prayer, bible, all those are helpful. But not the cure in serious biological cases. There needs to be a holistic treatmen. Medication, spiritual help, and therapy are all apart of the solution
Don't judge what you don't understand.
