As we see in knee, ankles, back bone, neck, and often fingers...they make a pop sound when pushed or stretched.

Air escaping the joints releasing tension. But if you crack your knuckles, knees, neck, fingers, etc. too much the bone starts to wear out leading to major problems
this noise is air escaping the joints.
lol the bones in that picture make a cracking sound because the 3 fingers are clearly broken.
I have heard from doctors saying that there are air bubbles in our joints. So when we stretch or push, you are actually cracking the air bubbles.
It is said that we should not be doing it too much like cracking our fingers.
Wow...i've always wanted to know the answer to that myself, never realised it was just air!
