I think there should be some kind of coop or something similar where self-employed people or the working poor (there are a LOT of them) could pool together and get health benefits that are affordable. If many people could get into a system like this it would take the working poor off of medicaid and allow all of us who need it to get affordable rates. Instead of a coop - Obama caved and instead gave a handout to the insurance corporations with his modified, bogus healthcare plan that will force people to pay for something they can't afford or be fined.
Paying more for health insurance than a mortgage each month is insane. Insurance companies profit off the sick and deny care all the time. With stricter regulations or - god forbid - an "opt in if you want to" socialized healthcare system we could regulate and bring down costs. Private insurance would then have to be competitive instead of gouging the citizens. Both sides could have what they want - don't want govt. health insurance FINE keep your private insurance. Let those of us who do want govt care be able to have it. MOST of us pay taxes too! You can't reason with people or find a middle ground though.
Unfortunately people have so demonized any kind of social system in this country that it will never happen due to ignorance. However, other countries with socialized medicine are in better health than we are. This is easily verifiable with a little research of the WHO (world health organization)
The same people who demonize socialism however still drive on the roads, call police during crimes, send their kids to public schools, use the fire department and collect medicare when they retire - but that's not socialism of course ;) and they aren't freeloaders when they do that ... sigh.
