Wash your hands with soap and water. Those anti bacteria/ hand sanitizers are ok as a backup plan but they don't actually remove the germs and bacteria, just smush it around on your hands. Even if the germs are killed, 99% of them, they are still on your hands.
The other way to prevent getting sick is having enough sleep. That's when your body heals and repairs itself. Give your immune system that down time to work.
Don't touch your face. That's the advice that has seemed to have helped me the most. I've become really aware of not touching my face after touching things at public places. In particular, I'm aware of it while traveling.
This is all in addition to the advice already cited of washing your hands with soap and water.
One of the best ways to prevent a cold is to eat carefully. Some people have tendency to catch a cold after eating certain food that cause colds - for example some extremely sour food trigger colds for those who are not used to these sour food or have allergy for sour food. Always stay away from places prone to smoke or dust or dirt as they would cause colds. If one stays in an extremely chill place or it happens to be freezingly chill winter, one should take extra care by drinking hot water or drinks and eating steaming-hot food; bathing in warm-hot water; wearing thick woollen sweaters and avoid going out when it is far below zero degrees C. One have to be healthy by doing yoga daily which helps in preventing cold to a good extent and be surrounded by clean natural surroundings that give out fresh air which is good for the human lungs.
Protect your immune system by getting enough rest (sleep), eating a well balanced diet with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and getting exercise. These three factors will keep you healthy and keep colds away.
