The only real way to achieve success when dieting is to be committed - not to a mental health facility ( although that may work in the short term) but committed to your goal!
I have tried everything: calorie counting, Atkins, shakes, points - you name it I have given it a go.  Most diets will help you lose a few pounds in the initial stages but when the novelty of eating nothing but air wears off they are difficult to sustain.
Ultimately the only sure fire way to maintain a healthy weight is through exercise and a balanced diet.  My favourite method is to record everything that I eat on a daily basis and likewise with exercise. It's a real eye opener and makes you stop and think before the junk passes your lips. To maintain a healthy weight I walk my dog and living in such a beautiful part of England it is no chore at all.

The best diet, isn't a diet at all. It's a lifestyle change with healthy eating and regular exercise. A diet isn't a way to lose weight, it's what we eat every day. Read my hub on how to lose weight safely, and keep it off. http://cloverleaffarm.hubpages.com/hub/ … ose-Weight

    Great answers above.

My preference for maintaining an acceptable weight/size is moderating one's intake and exercising. I look at food as fuel. Why fill up a tank to the brim if you're only driving 2 miles? In other words, don't cut out but eat just enough for you to carry out your daily activities.

Faddy diets produce good short term results but poor long term results. As others have suggested, it is all about changing your lifestyle.

I'm writing a couple of hubs that go into more detail about this. I can post links if you want when they're published.

Whenever I have ever thought about 'dieting' is has been mostly just eliminating foods I don't think are good for me - what you're left with is healthy foods.  That's how I diet.

That said, I am continuously learning about healthy foods that help strengthen your body, especially the immune system, so learning about healthy additions to your diet (unexpected things, like the right oils and fats which improve brain function) is a lifelong project.

Sadly, my favorite form of dieting is anorexia. Probably because I've been anorexic for years and am slowly getting back to it. But what I do eat is healthy. Lots of veggies. Fish three times a week. Calcium, Vitamins, whole grains, etc. Plus I work out every other day up to twice a day.

Drinking nothing but water for hydration while only eating 1500 calories in a way that you space out food consumption over the course of the day to boost metabolism. Exercise lightly at first then build up confidence to do more and challenge yourself and it starts to feel amazing instead of torturous and hard.

Eat vegetables that you like. You can eat a huge plate of them whenever you want. Exercise every possible day. Eat six small meals a day, never letting yourself become ravenous. Lots of exercise allows you to eat enough food to not go crazy. cloverleaffarm is absolutely right.

Best results in terms of what? If you are talking bout being slim, go on a diet that has low calories. If best results refers to being fat! Eat as much as possible! hahaha!
Lastly, if you're talking bout healthy and lean body, 6 meals a day which sums up around 1800 calories.

I was reminded by a doctor that true dieting has only one real way of success..  Stop eating so much!  He went on to point out that all of the diets in the world have one common denominator.. the reduction of food... even without the exercise it will yield results.

As simple and uncomplicated as it is... everytime that I would think about his comment I would say that I had to agree with what was going to be put into my mouth was going to be the result of the loss.. or gain.

With his insightfulness into the bottom line of dieting I decided that it was time for me to do just that... and I began a journey to choose to eat for survival only.
Having food in my life was not limited to sugar, calories.. etc.. but survival.  I chose to eat anything that I wanted.. but I was always aware that each mouthful had ramifications.  Over eating would mean that I could never accomplish my goal.

I had tried numerous diets, pills.. sweat rooms... but it took a simple statement to make me realize that he was right.  If I chose to eat much less.. only to survive then I would benefit in the end.  I lost 63 lbs..in 5 months and  it was the first time in my life that was actually easy.

There comes a time in our lives that all of the expensive programs, diet tricks etc.. need to really be simplified.. Do you want to lose weight? If so everytime you pick up something to eat..ask if its need (survival).. or want... if its because you Want it.. Dont eat it!  It doesnt mean that you cant have any forms of food.. but you have to also decide how much is Survival size.. Not Upsized.   We can live on far less food then We think that we need.

Drinking water? we need some to survive and it helps with flushing out our systems and also it fills us up but I never drank 8 glasses a day I just made sure that I had it available.  I also made sure at my meals that I drank a glass of water with it.

You can spend thousands of dollars to help you achieve the goal of weightloss.. in the end each one of those diets is doing exactly what the doctor said.. Making you eat less food.  So why not try the simple approach first...eating for survival works.  Your body does not require 3000 calories a day.  Reduce food intake and reduce your weight... simple and uncomplicated..anyone can do it.

Having lost a few pounds on the low fat diet but feeling awful, I gave low carb a try.  Now I feel great and have energy.  I cannot tolerate grains except in very small amounts.  I believe processed foods are harmful.  Now that I feel better and have energy, I am also more active.  I get outside for hikes and enjoy living!

Intermittent fasting. It's not a 'diet' - it's more of a long-term change in eating patterns. I will fast at least 2 times during the week for 18 hours per fasting period. When my fast is over, I resume my normal feeding. Intermittent fasting is not for everyone, but it definitely helps me keep my calorie intake in check without any of the negative side effects of fad diets.

Depends what you mean by results, I have dieted but not on eating less or no junk food. I went on a Low GI (Glycemic Index) diet where foods that have a smaller effect on the the body's blood-sugar levels. I went on this diet to improve my skin complexion along with not drinking any milk products.  Not only did this diet improve my skin drastically it also made me eat healthier every day, instead of plain sandwiches I usually eat re-heated pasta for lunch which is usually just from left-overs. Then for breakfast I eat Carman's brand (fruit included) oats cooked in water. I may still have odd junk food now and then but because of the diet my body copes reasonably well and along with regular exercise I stay is good, strong shape.
