Antibiotic resistance is a very are concern. I say this as an experienced registered nurse of many years, as well as a consumer. I remember writing on this subject 30-some years ago! Yet, not much has changed. While bacteria continue to develop resistant strains to current antibiotics, we also have the science to continue to develop more and better antibiotics. This is no excuse though for inappropriate prescription and overuse.
What we as concerned citizens can do is to not ask for an antibiotic prescription when we have a viral infection, only when we have a bacterial infection that our physician believes is best treated with antibiotics. We should take the full prescription, even if we are feeling better to ensure that all organisms are killed so that we do not encourage the development of resistant organisms.
