Gout is caused by high levels of Uric acid caused by a variety of factors including a diet high in purines( red meat, dark beer, dairy , spirits) . There can be other reasons such as internal enzyme defects and high cell turnover. The high levels of acid in blood eventually can get deposited on the joint surfaces causing bad inflammation - severe pain, swelling and redness.
Three lines of treatment - first anti inflammatories like ibuprofen , indomethacin, diclofenac for immediate relief along with painkillers. We can also use colchicine to reduce the severity of the attack.
For longer term, we need to check the uric acid levels in blood once an attack subsides and the if Gout is confirmed add allopurinol or zyloric which helps eliminate the Uric acid and reduce or eliminate attacks.
Dietary changes are equally important.
