Should I see a doctor about my headaches, or are they not a problem?

I get intense headaches at least twice a week, and always only on the left (my left) side of my head. This has been going on for at least a year or two, but the frequency has started to increase over the past few months. I'm absolutely useless when the headaches strike. I've been told that I need to go to the doctor, but I'm afraid the doctor will think I'm freaking out over nothing. Is there a simpler answer to what may be going on? I'm thinking they're probably just migraines.

Thanks. I know I'm worrying needlessly, but I've always been so frightened he/she will just say, "Everyone gets headaches."
