There is talk about going green and recycling and saving enegy.why are people not really into that?

i have seen ads even from major companies claiming that they are going green but none recycle, saves enegy nor go green in any other way which makes me wonder why so many people are not into saving the planet

Many people have the "do as I say not as I do" mode of thinking. Recycling takes extra effort which can often be very minor and other times major. People often want to know what's in it for them and when they can't see and feel the return immediately, they lose interest.

Relying upon people to "do the right thing" is in my opinion almost always a poor plan. Companies who "go green" do so primarily because a public relations firm said it will create a positive image for the company and in turn a fatter profit margin. Even a company that seems to really care about being environmentally responsible may not be motivated by altruism. Take Google for instance. Are they really environmentalists or do they simply create an environmental culture because of the people that attracts to work there?

Being that we are a market society (and world), a market solution is required to correct the problem. That kind of talk will make free marketeers start to twitch, but really a lot of the solutions will simply be allowing the market to actually be free and removing the externalities that have been built into the market in order for fossil fuel companies and their adjuncts to become insanely rich. Of course those very same people are the gatekeepers to the market, so it will never happen, which means that, basically, we are screwed.

Frankly humans tend to not see what's right in front of them. For example, experts were saying that the real estate bubble was going to pop and plunge America into a huge recession within a couple years. Nobody could see past the small profit they would make within the next few weeks, and we all ended up paying for it.

Same theory different scenario. The real effects of not recycling and saving energy haven't shown themselves on a huge scale yet. People aren't going to give up their laziness for the small things (small on a global scale at least).

My opinion on it is simple, if we destroy the world like we're currently doing we won't live to see the consequences. We'll all be dead. The world will flush all traces of our existence from its soil. And maybe in a few million years another species will evolve, take our place, and make the same mistakes.

I do not share your perspective. I have heard this since the hippie era and I think a lot of people are interested in "going green" and "saving the planet." I don't know anyone who is not concerned.

What good is all that when rockets are being launched into space regularly punching holes into the ozone layer?
