They are absolutely necessary, for both mother and child. The body will supply for the baby, what it needs, and take from the mother. So for the health of both, they are needed.
Vitamin supplements can prevent several common birth defects. Folic acid is very important during pregnancy. If you choose not to use supplements, make sure that you eat a well balanced diet including lots of veggies and beans.
These vitamins are totally essential for both the baby and the mother too during pregnancy. My doctor even had me take extra calcium, folio acid, iron and DHA too on top of my prescription pre-natal vitamin.
They are absolutely necessary. I skipped several days of my prenatals because I was stranded without them and I felt it. All I wanted to do was sleep and lie around. I can only imagine what it would be like years ago when women did not take any vitamins. It’s probably why the doctor would recommend so much rest. More importantly, the baby is the one who will ultimately suffer from not enough nutrients if the mother's diet is poor. Vitamins are a must.
