Ayurveda is one of the oldest forms of medicines from the vedic period from the Indus Valley Civilization. It is based on the concept of humourism (the five elements Ether, Air, Fire, Water and Earth) and of other governing energies like (Purity, Movement, Inertia). It is used as preventive, complementary and holistic medicine and uses herbs, minerals, treatments, yoga, dietary guidelines, massage and much more to help the patient. Ayurveda is ancient Sanskrit for 'the Science of Life'. Of course Ayurveda can have side effects as does Western Phytotherapy. Every herb has a potency of hot and cold, a taste and an effect so one has to take everything in to consideration. Some ayurvedic formulas use metals that can be toxic, so it is important to get treatment only from professionals. Ayurveda is a wonderful and highly recommended treatment when applied well.
