What's the single best healthy eating tip you've even been given?

We're all given advice by others around us- What's the single, best weight loss tip you've ever been given, who was it by and has it worked for you or others?

    Mix colors.

A professor in my Community Development courses used to say this. I don't think it was supposed to be for losing weight, but it definitely will keep us healthy. When I serve my family a plate full of yellow and white foods, I have failed! Unless you're dealing with M&Ms, it is hard to get greens, reds, oranges, yellows, and browns on the same plate without being healthy and balanced.

The single best healthy tip is not eating gluten.   The single best weight lost tip is not eating refined sugar.

Oh gosh! This is so hard for me as I have been given so many wonderful tips throughout the years. I'm a nutritionist by trade, and I would have to say the best tip for weight loss would be to limit starchy carbs to twice a week after a good workout. But, keeping a rainbow of foods within the diet is absolutely important. All those wonderful veggies not only provide fiber but also provide a plethora of nutrients (i.e., vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, antioxidants, etc.).

John, if you are going to eat like you did when you were 18 years old; you better back-check when play old-timers ice hockey!

Eat whatever you want in moderation, I lost 15kg in 3 Months, advice was given by my family. So I get to eat all the foods that I like, without sacrificing anything, while at the same time losing weight smile

Eat blue-green algae.  It's NOT pond scum; it grows in leaves (kelp is an algae). The reason it is such good food is that it is bottom of the food chain, easily digestable, mineral-rich food, with a profile of amino acids very similar to that of a healthy human. There are quite a few varieties (spirulina and chlorella are quite well-known), but the best is Aphanizomen flos-aqua (I'm pretty sure that is not spelled correctly), otherwise known as "Super Blue Green Algae."  You can get it from a variety of suppliers, but the one with arguably the best processing (freeze-dried and encapsulated) is Simplexity.com - they're the ones that patented the process, and their facility is the only one right beside the mountain lake where this grows.  I'm not going to try to sell you on it, so check it all out yourself.

True, it does not have the appeal of a pack of Oreo's, but it is good stuff.  Check it out.

I've tried spirulina- it's an interesting concept for a food although I had it within a protein drink. Seemed very gentle on the stomach

to lose weight eat a low fat diet and excercise.  fats and oils have twice the calories per gram of carbohydrates.  exercise speeds up your metabolism.  eating in moderation is a given.  more fruits and veggies less junk food. sleep

Keeping a low fat diet is actually a myth. Essential fatty acids, especially Omega-3s, are especially important for every single cell in the body, and it actually helps lower body fat. There has been too much scientific research on this.

Your stomach is as big as your two fists put together.  If the food on your plate takes up more room than your two fists, you have too much on your plate.

Oh, well, it wasn't really a weight loss tip, so much as an overall eating for health tip - chew your food slowly and thoroughly.

Although eating for health isn't always the same as eating for weight loss, taking your time when you chew can contribute to losing unhealthy weight because it helps the digestive process work more efficiently.

It has helped me on a more personal level, since I was prone to some rather nasty stomach issues for a while. When I started treating my body a little more gently through proper eating, I noticed a distinct turn for the better in my overall health.

The best tip that I have been given regarding healthy eating is simply:  Do not eat anything that contains more than 3 ingredients.  This will lead you to primarily the fruits, vegetables, legumes, lean meats and limited dairy you need in order to not only improve your health, but maintain it as well.  smile  This has helped me immensely in getting my Diabetes under control, losing weight and maintaining a health lifestyle.  It doesn't mean you cannot treat yourself on occasion, but you will find that your body will adjust and that apple you might have passed by previously is more delicious than ever!

For me it was a friend telling me to try not eating carbs after lunchtime and not to eat bread.  Worked a treat but now I just eat two bowls of pasta at lunch instead wink

I think the 90/10 tip has been most helpful: eat things that are healthful and nutritious 90% of the time and don't worry about the other 10%. I think this rule sets and achievable standard that allows for some treats. Unfortunately it seems many people follow the rule in inverse (i.e. eat what they want 90% of the time and eat what is healthy 10% of the time) which is a problem.

My best tip that I received was to gradual eliminate things like refined sugar and start incorporate natural sweetners like maple syrup, stevia, etc. I found that it helps curve my sweet tooth and make me appreciate a good piece of fruit over a brownie. However, lets be honest nothing replaces a good brownie. Indulging every once and while to avoid feeling deprived.

"The best foods to eat are those which rot easily". In other words, those foods that are as natural as possible - raw fruit, veggies, etc.

The best advice I was ever given was to just eat healthy. Following this rule is the best way to lose , imo.
