First of all, I want to say how sorry I am for what you have been through. I assume you were renting, since you said that you were "assured" the home was insured. Depending on your lease and/or the State in which you live, you may have options. Normally, "renters insurance" is the only way to protect your furnishings and belongings, but if your lease did not explicitly state that you MUST purchase renter's insurance, and the home itself was not insured by your landlord, you can probably sue to recoup your loss, in small claims court. I would strongly suggest you look into this. In most all states, it is illegal to rent a home out to anyone, without having Home owners Insurance.
All you can do from this point, is go forward, one step at a time. The Red Cross should be able to offer some assistance, as well as other organizations, such as Goodwill and The Salvation Army, in terms of replacing some clothing for you and your kids....until you can get on your feet.
Although things are quite depressing at the moment, each day will bring some peace and comfort, as you work through the worst of it. People often step up and open their hearts to those in need temporarily. Accept all that is offered you in kindness and generosity. You have helped others and now it is time for you to receive. I wish you much support and strength. VERY glad that no one was injured.
I think you may want to bring your story to the attention of your local newspaper.
Best of luck to you!.....
