Why is cutting and self mutilation a trend among teens?
I have noticed a rising trend in cutting and self mutilation among teens via social media. Why do you think this is a trend? Why is there a rise in mental illness?
I volunteered at a school a few years ago where cutting was a dangerously popular way among teens to feel in control of something that they otherwise had no control over.
One young girl cut herself because her father had passed away. The pain was more than she could bear. The girl cut herself to feel some sense of control to "release" the pain that she was so desperately trying to hide from the world that told her to get over it. That's just one incident out of many.
Thank you Crafty. Yes, I've heard it is to release emotional pain. But I don't understand why it's so common now. Hard to understand the popularity.
"Get over it" is not good advice. It seems this type of pain should be talked out with others as sounding boards to listen to what one is really trying to say instead of letting them act it out in violent ways.
Of course it's not, auspicious. This poor girl was literally left to wade in her own pain as others told her to just get over her father's death. Terrible for a young girl to have to suffer in silence.
